Typically the wire failure is at a crease - an unfortunate design. Anyone with mechanical/electric experience would surmise that bending a wire and insulation enough times will cause a break.
I don't know that I'd "upgrade" the wire (and that gauge or size is an upgrade).
If there was no other way around this design, at least a sub-harness for the flex area would have allowed a far easier replacement of a wearable item.
It may be a little bit of strain relief could prolong the harness, if one could distribute the flex from occurring at a high tension point.
