Yellow Car on Lift Indicator - Smart Top issue?

I received the indicator showing the car on the lift in Yellow with no other signs. That indicated either brake lamps failed (which they didnt) or Fuel supply manufacturing. I had no issues with performance.

I was going to take it in and thought I should remove the Smart Top Module since they may go into that area to trace the Brake light wiring. Since I removed it the problem went away.

My guess is that the smart top had some issue with the brake light wiring. Anyone else had this issue or familiar with the way things are wired there?

no issues with mine... its a tight fit in there... did you try rearranging the harness to get it to fit better?

Did you update to the latest firmware and follow all the steps prior to installing? With all of the research I did prior to buying mine, I never heard of a symtom like yours. Please keep us informed.

Turns out its not the Smart Top. Happened again when its cold. Thinking about it, it was cold when I was having the problem with the smarttop installed.

Brakes and fule seem to be fine. Likely a bad sensor. Have to take it to the dealer, will probably wait a month till I have more time

Glad to hear you still have a good Smart TOP module. Hope it's a covered quick fix on the sensor.

I have SmartTop and saw this warning light too. However it has nothing to do as you said. Went to dealership. They diagnosed a weak battery. They changed battery and since then (like 4 months ago), the warning never came back.

Finally made it to the dealer. They assure me its the service light. They said they reset it and it hasnt come back. I'm thinking once it gets cold again it will re-occur. We will see. Didnt help its warm weather while they have it. Wasn't happening then.

I had the exact same thing recently. It can be indicative of a battery problem. In my case, I let ran the battery down too much because I was trying debug the audio interface I was installing. I've also read in other threads where someone's battery was failing and he got the same icon.

I also experienced the on again / off again yellow Car on Lift icon, and noticed it came on after the car had been sitting for at least a few hours, but not after restarting the car after being off for just a short time. So I was already thinking battery.

Turns out the car was throwing multiple low voltage faults, and the battery was replaced. Also, I had a communication error with the VTG, so the VTG was replaced as well. Not sure whether this was related to the low voltage faults or not.

One week since the repairs, and have not had the yellow Car on Lift icon come back on since.

I had this icon the very first time I drove my car. It had been sitting on the dealer lot for months and the battery voltage was low. As expected, the issue went away after I started to daily the car.

One thing is that the aftermarket part might "leech" the battery and cause this issue. This happened to a friend with 335i with an earlier plug in style of chip.

Thanks all for the input. The smart top has been removed for a couple of months. wanted to make sure it wasnt the cause

The dealer keeps telling me its a service light as they said they fixed it and it came on again the next morning

They had me go out to the car and roll through the computer and were then stumped because no service items were due. I told them because the BMW manual says its not a service icon.

I used your posts (less the smarttop ref) along with the page in the manual stating what the light is and am going back on Monday to leave it overnight for service. At least they give free loaner cars

Ill post up what happens

Took them in the experiances and info listed here along with the page from the manual and they tested and replaced the battery. Found codes showing battery issues in the system

My Service Advisor staopped working there today so they gave me a new guy who took my input and found out I was right.

Thanks for your help problem resolved.
