Differences in years/body types?
Hey guys,
I'm new to the Z4 community (I'm an M3 guy) but I'm in the market for an E89 (probably CPE). While browsing pictures, I noticed that some came with single-sided dual exhaust tips, some double-sided single tips, and some with double-sided dual tips. I also noticed differences with eh front ends as well. Can someone brief me on the differences when it comes to body styles? Thanks, Chris |

Also, the different front bumper and rear diffuser could be the M Sport package or Z4 35is. Both are 2010 and up.

Ahh thanks for the responses. That brochure section answered the tailpipe question perfectly.
Are they any quality aftermarket exhausts for the 2.3/3.0 that have a 2x2 tailpipe setup? Obviously that would mean a rear bumper/diffuser conversion of some sort as well. |

For 2012, 28i and 35i are the same. The only difference I noticed is that for the 28i the the surround of the rod on the bumper is black while on the 35i it is painted silver to match the rods. The 35i also has an exhaust on each side while the 28i has both tips on one side. Correct me if I'm wrong.
![]() There is also an M-Sport Package available. ![]() And the 35is has the M-Sport body but with the rods in the front bumper. ![]()

First off, note that the 23i is a euro spec model and if you wanted the less powerful engine in a used car, you'd be getting the 30i (NA inline 6). If new, it would be the 28i (twin turbo 4 banger)
There are several aftermarket exhausts with different tailpipes configs, but it seems Eisenmann is the most popular (and expensive). They make dual (left and right) and quad exhaust systems. You can get a new diffuser, but some have had a shop carve out the space for additional tailpipes. If they're good, the results can be acceptable, but I would really want to be confident in the tech's work. check in the classified ads section of this forum. there are often members selling used or new exhausts.

Eisenmann, I think, has the best exhaust of all the choices, but the image and sound is a very personal choice. My Eisenmann on my 30i required additional hangers and a right side heat shield (all factory BMW parts) for a clean install, with the only critical work being the cutout on the right side, but using the left side opening as a template, and the rear reflectors as locating points, it was an easy install, and sounds better than the clips on the Eisenmann web site. I think it also improved top end performance, but that is a "seat of my pants" determination, but would go this route again.

in E89 nothing really changed so if u go to bmwusa.com u can configure and visually see in and out. (the only difference is prior to 2012 there was a Z4 30i and now its 28i with turbo 4)
