Whereas when you back out people/other cars/shopping carts can be flying at you from nearly all sides.

Line up the top of the curb, so that it is just visible under your driver-side side-view mirror.

I've never hit the curb in any BMW in the last 10 years with that trick.

On topic, I generally try to park in places where I can drive in and drive out without reverse. (aka pumps spots at a gas station, outfield in a big lot.)

Yes but in Los Angeles backing in into a parking spaces is illegal on some cities... Like Glendale...

but i always watch out for signs. 98% of the time i back into spaces.

my old apartment complex had a stupid rule about not backing into a parking spot for some unknown reason. i completely ignored it, so they would ticket me. but since tickets were issued by the stupid security/maintenance contractor, they would not stand in court. i got like 60 or those things. lol
