Size of speakers

Hello all,

I have a Z4 3.5i with the standard, basic hi-fi. Which sucks. So I'm planning to do an upgrade.

I've checked the pages at http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E8...speaker_front/ (and the other pages before and after this one) and I can see where the speakers are mounted on the Hi-Fi Speaker System and the Hi-Fi Professional but what I can't see is the sizes of the speakers!

Does anyone know what the sizes of the various speakers are? Metric or imperial is fine, I just need to know the sizes so I can order aftermarket units to install.

Thanks!

Hey DC,
Speakers are the least issue with the standard system. The head unit is terrible and the rear channels are highly equalized. Replaced all the speakers and added amps, except for the sub which has only limited space and the sound remained horrific. Replaced the head unit and a world of difference. My shop was able to fit a Pioneer navi double DIN unit. Pioneer also makes a single DIN higher end unit which would work fine also....anyways, good luck with it

I will recommend that you change the headunit, get a decent 2 channel amp and component speakers. Lost the rear speakers and add a sub if you like bass. You can fit a 6.5 inch at the foot rest area

Garage List
Depends on head unit as to if you can change it. IE if nav, then a bit stuck. HU is heavily equalised but this can be removed and set to flat line level with a bit of coding wizadry.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies So I can't really change the head unit as I have iDrive with navigation. But an external DAC like the JL would help and I'm planning on using one of these.

And I have a Blaupunkt 555 plug-and-play 5 channel amplifier that I'll be installing too, which should take care of that side of things.

The stock 6 speakers are a) just 6, and b) not that great, hence my question about the size of the speakers / speaker mount points so I know what aftermarket speakers to buy. It looks like 4" door and rear then - what size are the tweeters that go in the A posts by the mirrors? What about the speaker in the center of the dash, the footwells and also the subwoofer (which I think is behind the passenger seat, right?) Any ideas?

Thanks!

The following link shows what I have done to upgrade the system. I would skip the tweeters, just replace the 4" door and rear speakers by good full range ones and a subwoofer to do the serious bass work. Keep the foot well speakers, these are not that bad.

Just skip the head unit replacement story:
