Voice Recognition - Didn't Realise I had it...

I have had my Z4 for two months now, although sadly for a lot of that period its been in the garage for warranty issue, anyway, now I've had some chance to spend some time with it I've discovered it has Voice Recognition.

I didn't think it had it as when I pressed the Voice button on the steering wheel nothing happened.

Well last night I happened to be sat in the car and pressed the button (must have been more than once) by accident and thought I could hear something, very very faintly, a female voice I thought?

I thought I may have caught the screen of my iphone in my pocket and dialled someone and for some reason it wasn't coming through the stereo, so looked at the iPhone and no nothing...

So I pressed the button again and again and yes I heard something - but very faintly, either a beep or a voice or something.

So I kept pressing the button and hitting the volume up button on the steering wheel quickly afterwards until yes, I heard the womens voice - beep - cancel - beep - cancel.

So bonus I have Voice Recognition. : )

Now need to work out what it does...

David

Hope yours works better than mine, it only understands British English and I can only speak American English, I have better luck when I switch to German [but no great luck]..

Well I'll be speaking Yorkshire English - being from the North so we'll see if she understands... Otherwise I'll be trying to speak like the Queen!

Have it but never bothered to use it. The iDrive controls are so good already...

Certain voice commands work well for me. Others don't. I use "scale 800 feet", "assistance window - arrow display" "navigation voice off" often, and occasionally "dial number" followed by a phone number. I used "address book" and "home address" today.

I'm pretty disappointed with the voice recognition. When I want it to play music it wants to call people. When I want the Nav to show up it switches to AM radio. WTF. Since when does CD 1 track 1 sound like call home? Maybe this only works well with the roof up.

I found that inorder to use the voice commands well, I have to have the windows closed and the roof up. If I dont, it screws it up pretty easily.

This is my third car with voice recognition, and I use it as much in the Z4 as in the others which is to say never.

There a reason why it's just as ineffectual in a car as with personal computers, and it's that a well-designed user interface (iDrive or touch screen) works just as well and is less error prone.
