BMW's next-generation Z4 has replaced its heavy black shell with a
thin veneer of its new graphic camouflage. Despite the vomit-inducing nature of the Z4's new disguise, it's a huge step forward in terms of assessing the evolution of the roadster's styling. Many of the polarizing features of the current Z4's design have been toned-down, for what appears to be a much more elegant look. Chris Bangle's fussy flame-surfacing seems to have been more or less extinguished, as the side character lines appear to have a more logical flow throughout the Z4's surface development. The Z4's twin- kidney grille takes inspiration from BMW's CS concept, as well as the new 7-series, while a strong chin spoiler anchors the front fascia nicely. The rear styling shows that the current Z4's Quasimodo hump is gone. In its place is a rear deck that resembles the 6-series a bit--only much more pleasantly resolved. This prototype is sporting the retractable hard top, although new reports out of Germany tell us that buyers will also be given the opportunity to choose a soft-top option. BMW's radical design revolution hasn't always been aesthetically successful, at least in the eyes of the BMW faithful. But BMW styling now seems to be hitting its stride, recapturing some of its former pleasing proportions. It appears that the steadying hand of BMW designer Adrian van Hooydonk is getting the beloved Bimmers back where they need to be. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It actually seems to keep alot of the current Z4 themes intact, moreso then I thought they would. Usually BMW makes radical changes to models between generations.. this seems very evolutionary. I like the idea of the folding hardtop too, I just hope they found a way to keep the performance..

Looks like they're making them bigger. Hopefully the Z2 will stay to the roots of a small and tossable simple sport car.

Dual exhaust almost definately means it will recieve an engine transplant from the 135/335i. Too bad, 'cuz I actually think the 3.0si engine is the best NA I6 BMW has built... EVER!

So this means there won't be a coupe version anymore? I mean, this almost looks like a coupe...

Seems like they have added a few more ridges on the side... almost looks too busy, IMHO. I like the mild reshaping of the back end with a less pronounced "duck bill" trunk lip. Tail lights don't look as shapely, but still look aggressive.
Did you notice the ridges down the bonnet? A lot closer together than the current M bonnets. Overall it looks more sculptured than the current Zed. But I was hoping for more revolutionalry vs evolutionary. Glad I have what I've got now... this new model won't be making mine look old at all. ![]() I hope they do away with the orange reflectors on the side mirrors. Those stick out like a sore thumb! |

Kind of looks like the old Dodge Stealth/Mitsubish Eclipse. I can't say I'm that fond of it. But who knows, it might look completely different with normal paint.
Can anyone photoshop those pics to put a normal colour on it? |

The overall proportions are good. The nose is high, like an Aston, which is interesting. The side sculpting is odd, but may be camo. The rear is disappointing, like just about every recent BMW, in that it is narrow and tall - not the look of a sporty car. The folding roof looks really good.

It's still heavily camouflaged so dont call it dull just yet. The zebra print hides the contours and angles a lot. Still going to wait till 2010 to make up my mind if I like it or not. That's when my lease is up too =P
