Hi All,
I heard from a someone that here is a kit to up the horsepower of our z4 and add more gas mileage. Has anyone done that? what's the pro and con in doing so? Is it easily done by yourself? Please let me know where to order and what exactly it is? I am a manual transmission 35i |

Considering the only way you will make more horsepower is to shove more fuel into the motor - the only way to get better gas mileage is to get a 4 cyl....
Why buy a twin turbo 6 if you are worried about mpg ? |

Lurcher, there are people who like to have horsepower yet still want good mileage so that they don't have to fill the tank as often. It's not all about the cost of the gas.
I heard from someone out of the blue at a party and asked if I tuned up my z4 because it can help add the horsepower and add more mileage, he told me that kit's name but I totally forgot what that was cause I was half drunk at the party. I am just curious if there is such kit, but not sure if I will upgrade yet. Last edited by mybank2828; 09-29-2014 at 02:05 AM.. |

The point was - they are inversely proportional.
The only way to increase HP is to burn MORE fuel (and air). cooler intake, larger exhaust, etc... The only way to get better mileage is to burn LESS fuel. Plenty of ways to do this, smaller motor, more air pressure in tires, aerodynamics, etc..... This is physics, just get to pick one Then again - this may help: http://www.ebay.com/itm/For-BMW-Inta...4b2862&vxp=mtr |

Do not buy that ebay ripoff. Lurcher is right though, you can't have more horsepower and better gas mileage.
Dinan, JB4 and Cobb are the most common tunes discussed. Go to Bimmerfest, e90post or N54 tech and you'll find the merits of each debated ad naseum. The JB4 is not being sold in Cal. because of CARB standards. As I read their website it is illegal in Cal. And presumably in the other 12 states that have adopted Cal. CARB standards. And as I understand it, the current plan is for the feds to adopt Cal. CARB standards, so JB4 could be a problem. Also JB4 potentially creates warranty problems I wouldn't want to deal with. Dinan has a warranty that mimics BMW original warranty. Dinan will pay for anything that breaks that BMW won't. Many BMW dealers are authorized Dinan dealers.

In the case of our N54, more air is from higher boost, so stay off the boost. Which means use less throttle and upshift sooner. EDIT: one thing that MIGHT help is the Cobb LT (linear throttle) setting. The ST (stock throttle) opens up the throttle more than what you pressed in the gas pedal, so LT might help you moderate the throttle better. It isn't going to give you "more hp with more mpg" per se, because you can't have both together at the same time. Last edited by nicknaz; 09-29-2014 at 05:36 PM.. |

Thanks guys, these are all great comments. I have decided to just leave the mod alone. I haven't been using the "Sport" mode and now that I realize using it; I am already happy with the acceleration
