3 weeks in the 35is, initial thoughts....
Having gone from the E92 M3 to the 35is I will try not to compare them as they are totally different animals.
This car is a blast to drive which is the only thing that really matters isn't it? Plus the car looks fantastic and the sounds are wonderful. Have always been a manual guy, and can heel and toe pretty good, but I am sold 100% on DCT. Yes the M style paddles would be better, but I am pretty comfortable just using right hand for upshifts and left for downshifts.with these. Had a 2000 Z3 M Roadster and this is so much better in every way. Visibility with top up is much better, and the car is very quiet. I am 6' 1" and I don't feel a bit cramped. Great seats, great ergonomics. Only 650 miles so I have kept revs below 4500. I have not seen official 0-60 times, but this car feels quicker than 4.8 or whatever BMW says it is. The DCT is so smooth maybe it just seems to get there about as quick as the M3 did with the manual? Anyway, I bet the magazines will squeeze at least 4.5 out of it. Brakes feel pretty good, but again have not really stood on them yet. Steering is where I notice the biggest difference from the M3. The M is razor sharpe while this does have a heavier feel, like driving through sand in slow corners, at least in normal mode. Sport and Sport + do feel much better, and on fast sweepers the steering is fine and the car really feels planted. Not sure I like the run flat tires on this car. They certainly don't help the ride quality or grip. Bottom line, the car is what I thought it would be and what I wanted. The fun factor is awesome for 99% of the driving I do. Feel like Lewis Hamilton with the DCT!! I am sure we will here how the Boxster is a pure sports car blah blah, but I doubt the difference would be noticed in most real world driving, so unless you are at Road Atlanta, this is the car to get at this price level. I got 27.3 mpg on the interstate last week with a/c on at 75-80 mph. Can't wait to get it broken in and push it a little bit more, and I am relly looking forward to the 369 lb/ft of torque in overboost! |

Great report SCBMW02, I feel much the same way having driven a M3 for 4 years then a 2008 Z4 3.0is for 10 months before I traded it in for my now Z4 sDrive 3.5i ... now it is not an M like yours. For what I need it it will do me for quite a number of years.
Mind you love to compare it to your "M" so if you are changing your mind my ship to address is much closer to you then my learned Calgary friend mcbeee Happy Motoring

actually I'd ship to Arizona if I had the cash for another one... but I don't think SCBMW02's going to part with it any time soon It sounds like three of us went from M3's to the new Zed (Zee). We must be trendsetters...

Try and get a ride in a Z4 with the Dinan Stage II, the 380hp and 425 lbs of torque make quite a difference......faster then my M ever was. and it's a looker too..

I have in the mean time about 2500 km (about 1500 miles), and after break-in period I gradually increased rpm's. I now see regularly 6000rpm; I can only describe it as 'forward trust' instead of 'forward acceleration' (don't know if that's understandable/clear what I mean) Still 'learning' the car though regarding to cornering
