Also note the slightly different colored bumpers. I wonder if thats Melbourne Red like the M3 or Vermillion Red like the X6?

M Sport does not equal M

No quad exhausts, just an M Sport version as it was properly titled...

As for a bump in HP, I would think that since BMW recently released an optional bump in HP for $1400 for 3ers that that would also be an option here. I would guess $1400 in addition to the additional cost for the M-Sport package...

I think we can look for an M version of the Z4 after the next generation M3 with turbo-6 debuts, M Roadster will probably sport the same engine, which according to some sources may even be a V6 god forbid! Same situation as the last M Roadster will appear 3 model years after this, with the facelifted Z4. By then the economy should be friendlier. Just a thought.

Your right, it's "tu-tone" - upper is Crimson Red and lower (bumpers) are the M3 / X6 M Melbourne Red.

Yeah!

I think they must have painted black ones because they look darker (almost like mechanic with dirty hands smudges) at the seams where the bumper meets the body panel.

The biggest give away that it is not an M is the lack of quad exhaust.

It could just be a M Sport package, but I think some of the details change as it gets closer to production.

Considering that BMW had to give away the last Z4M at the end of it's model with $10K under MSRP pricing why would they even consider making another one at this time.

The new Z4 35i is priced in the low to Mid $50s about the same price as the last Z4M. A new M version would have to be prices in the $60s which is a little on the high side for the performance this car would provide.

Sadly, BMW has confirmed that it has canceled the Z4 M.
The automaker said the economic downturn and a lack of customer interest in the model ruled out going forward with an M version of the Z4.
But it seems odd to cite the crisis hitting automotive sales as a reason for killing the model when the company is also going forward with the X5 M and the X6 M and a whole host of new products that are large, expensive and not very economical on fuel costs.
So maybe the second reason cited was a larger factor than they are letting on, the lack of customer demand. Hard to imagine that of all the new upcoming BMW models, including the 5-series GT, that the Z4 would be the one where customer interest in an M version hasn't been piqued enough.
A BMW spokesperson was quoted by iMotor.co.uk as saying,"Given the current economic crisis there is no business case for a full-on M version of the Z4." The spokesperson also admitted that the X5 M and X6 M were given the go-ahead before the collapse in sales which, in many cases, have hit premium brands just as hard as the volume automakers.
The consolation prize will be an M Sport package for the Z4, like the one for the 135i. That would include a few M-badges tucked here and there but mainly on the steering wheel, a more tightly tuned suspension, a body kit and bigger alloy wheels. Couple all that with the BMW's 3.0 liter, twin-turbo with 306 hp and it should pack enough of a punch. What else do you want?
How about a fire breathing ashphalt tearing porsche killing twin turbo V8...other than that nada.........

Would they go through all that without a nice bump in HP? Hopefully that thing is going to have at least another 50 HP under the hood.

It is not a finished product living up to BMWs high standards, hence it is not wothy carrying the BMW badge.

I guess this one will be the sDrive40i, model year '11. Model year '12 will replace the N52 engine by a 2.0L turbo (>210Hp) and 3.0L (>270Hp), both direct full injection (EURO5).

I would guess the 3.5M has the Performance package BMW just released for the 335i and 135i. This adds extra water cooling capacity ( a secondary heat exchanger) and increases the boost slightly to produce an additional 23 wheel HP.

Less than what you can get by adding the ESS, GAIC, or the piggies ( 50 to 80+ hp), but under the BMW warranty. All of this in addition to the current 275 wheel or 306 crank standard hp.

This would be really cool, if what you say comes to fruition. Every little bit (of HP) helps.

I hope it gets the 6-piston brakes from the 135i. How come the 135i is the only car in the BMW range that has this???

the M Package is mainly esthetic. No additional power. Just refer to the M Package for 3 series, 1 series, etc

Copyright Carpix / BMW Z4 with M-Sport Package Caught Testing on Nurburgring
By Thami Masemola
September 17, 2009 8:06 PM
Filed Under: BMW, German, Spy Photos
The Z4 M is no longer going into production and leaves us with a slight feeling of dissatisfaction upon viewing these photos. The words "consolation prize" spring to mind. BMW is not the only one of course; Mercedes-Benz will not bring out a proper AMG model for the new E-Class Coupe but will instead offer an AMG sport package.

However, it's in the M-sport spirit that fans need to take in these spy pictures of a Z4 kitted out in M-Sport clothes. It looks very agile as it corners around the Nürburgring. Had it not been for a few telltale signs like the two exhaust pipes and side mirrors one would have certainly been fooled into thinking an about-face turn on the Z4 M had been made.

The M-Sport kit will consist mostly of larger wheels, different front and rear bumpers, M badges inside and out as well as a tighter suspension system. The model caught by our spies is the range-topping sDrive35i, however the package would probably be offered for the full Z4 range.

Hopefully, BMW execs will change their mind and offer the real deal.

I'm really curious how much different the M-Sport Package would be.

I understand the bit about cosmetic parts, and the current Z4 is already offered with M Adaptive suspension and larger wheels.

Different programing?

Will is consist of larger diameter stabilizer bars?

More hp/tq?

but that was a different car all together and it seems this design is more welcomed than the previous bangle version. also, the /m version was offered way too late relative to the e46 m3. by then i'm sure many consumers were holding out waiting for the new v8.
