Saw the same issue on the BMW 1Series, normal 120d has 147hp, 120d limited Sport Ed has 177, but can find any differences. Got the BMW Performance Power Kit for my 120d LSE, took it to 200hp, but required new motor control box, inter cooler, hoses and a new torque converter, but no internal differences with the 118d, 120d and the 123d. Must be marketing and profit margin...

I've spoken with a few tuners and they're waiting for the hack companies to produce a release. Once that's done the tuners will then be able to play with the sensors (so I am told!). My understanding is that the Kelleners pass through cannot access all of the sensors and hence is limited by how much power it can release. Given that the part numbers are identical I'm confident (and slightly wishful!) that the 20i can be "released" to have the same power as the 28i. Here's hoping!

If the engine is pretty much the same I wonder how hard it can be to get around 240-250bhp at the crank. I don't really need 250+ or 300bhp like they can get the 28i to put out but around 240 would be ideal.
So how are you enjoying your new motor? Much like yourself I'm not after 250-300bhp. 245bhp with the standard mpg figures work for me....

Well, I am very surprised. Got torque at a very low RPM and I am actually pretty pleased with the sound it makes! Specially in first gear and a bit in second when you release the throttle.. the little 'pops' coming out of the exhaust are awesome. Too bad it doesn't do it in other gears or while driving/shifting normally (sucker for sound)

It steers and shifts MUCH lighter and better than my E90. I am VERY pleased with it

Now just waiting for the 'hack' to get it to the 28i power and I'm a super happy man

I've checked the difference between 520i and 528i is in the compression ratio 11:1 vs 10:1
All parts are the same including engine blocks, crankshaft, cylinder head, head gaskets, drive shafts and transmission etc. The only part I find different is the piston, there are two types of pistons; one for lower compression engines (S858a=yes). Given the head gaskets are the same, the piston should be the part that reduced the compression ratio in 528i. Don't know if the quality of the two pistons are the same or not? Maybe just changing the head gasket to reduce compression ratio to 11:1 and remap ECU will do, any other thoughts?

Wasn't the 123d a twinturbo I4 and therefore different from the 116d-120d?

Thing is not many tuners seem to be busy releasing the full potential of the N20 in the Sdrive20i version? Too bad... I would really like to get it up to the 28i performance. I don't need 300bhp configs but 240-250 would be perfect!

The piston is the same for both engines on Z4.

Correct.. there are some other minor tweaks but essentially its a software over boost to get the extra 35 or so horses, but even then, its a temporary over boost so most of the time its essentially a 35i with extra badges and a higher price tag!

There is a difference of about 60 bhp between the 20i and the 28i... Should be nice.

60bhp difference is HUGE in the below 300bhp class

Gotta be nice... living in a petrolhead-friendly country...
28i no punch? Don't really get what you want with the Z4 then.. Maybe you were better off buying a Boxster or even a Carrera convertible then? Z4 is more of a GT car than a racer

Still wondering if it is possible to get the N20 in the 20i version up to the 28i specs since it's the same engine...

so in stock mode we are only getting 190 whp? I forgot which magazine but they did a dyno run and was getting 220 whp / 260 tq. Man a 70 whp + gain / 100TQ would honestly great. I just hope BMS doesn't charge 2g for it.

Look at these:
The first one (Speed Buster) has the same increase of the kelleners (which costs about 1900€) but this one is much cheaper.
http://www.speed-buster.de/en/chiptu...ps/a-10109573/

The second one is the cheapest and it increases the power to 260 ps and the torque to 336 nm

Pretty nice, isn't it?

I've got the same engine, and I'm also often doing that
Also got twin echaust pipes with your 20i?
The burble at the upshifts in the first and second gear are also awesome, third gear is barely noticable unfortunately.
It's a bummer that the pops doesn't occur when your higher in the RPM range
