I don't see how anybody could see the new SLK a good looking design in any way. It's a bastardized melting pot of MB's new design language jammed into far too small of a package. I don't know what's worse: the hunchback rear, the disjointed lumpy profile, or the barricade destroying ram-nosed front end. The previous SLK, while not stand-out or even that aggressive, was far better as a whole design than this piece imo.

Wow, nice upgrade on the SLK. I think I like it's look better than the Z4. It doesn't look feminine like the past versions.

SLK looks better than the Z4 but then Z4 wins in performance and MPG thanks to a turbo 6. Looks like it's 0.5 quicker to 60.

Z4 is too much of a chick car, SLK looks more mean. Plus the AMG will own the show since there is no M planned.

I think the antenna is in the windshield. I am not 100% sure of that.

I was seriously considering buying this SLK when it was released as I wanted a roadster, but having carefully picked through all the spy shots, I decided that it would not look as good as the Z4 by a long shot. I think I was right!!

BTW: I agree with someone that said the old SLK looked more attractive - they should have evolved that design instead.

So Mako, having been an owner of the old M-coupe and roadster I assume you think the previous E85/86 was/is better looking regardless? It would stand to reason that you'd prefer the look of the SLK not to mention that you now own an MB.

I on the other had sold my Benz to buy the "iS" because MB design has become squarish blocks that are unimaginative, a point well represented in the SLK.

As you can see from the pic of my baby there is nothing girlie about it other than the fact I do occasionally refer to her as "Mistress".

Holy crap.. apologies for the size!

I like the looks of the new SLK. Not thrilled about the color matched windshield trim. The interior is nothing to write home about. The electro optical sun roof is cool technology. But I still prefer the Z4. Can't wait till the mags start the comparo testing - should be interesting.

That rear end is ugly on the new SLK.

i don't see the Z4 as a chick car... neither this new slk... i like the slk's profile, it looks like the new 6er lol. Z4 has the performance and the looks on its side, not that the slk is ugly, its great.

You mean massive body roll, a steering system that is not connected to the front wheels, and the engine note played through the speaker system?!?!?!?!

The SLK looks *worse* than the previous version. The front of the old SLK was very nice in AMG form, it's just the profile and back that need work. Now this new generation is like a kid-SLS ripoff. Doesn't gel. It looks more 'masculine', if some ppl care about that, but to the pt of being slightly brutish. The Z4 still looks better, no doubt about it.

Not everybody has the same taste in design

I, for once, actually think the design has *temporarily* surpassed that of BMW on this one, I like the new SLS-like interior and the more squared profile in comparison to the previous gen SLK, which I didn't like at all.

IMO curves = chick-car cues

...so this gen of SLK definitely looks more masculine, and I must also say I'm digging the new magic sky control roof.

Much improved SLK but still prefer the Z. The rear shot of the SLK looks good the front has that ugly Chrysler looking grill.

Z4 looks more agile
SLK looks more angular trying to smalller SLS, The SLK 171 had more resembles of the SLR.

Z4 interior is more luxury and premium vs
slks new SLS design. I like though the vents and the display.

SLK front looks very strong but does not add up nice all over the body.
Z4 looks more smoother and nice.

The SLK I would only buy with AMG Sport Package. Without it looks too boring.

I am saying this as a former SLK55 Driver!! Check out my profile

Thanks for nice pics

Neither car's looks closes the deal for me; I don't think either's body/interior is so attractive or unattractive that I would be upset owning it. I would pick the better performing car, and I suspect that'd be the Z4.

Only at the very top the MB range do I find cars I'd consider over BMW's corresponding model.

The verdict:

No comparison!
Nothing can beat the beauty of the Z4's curvaceous, sharp, and refined design.
I also miss the old SLK. That thing was almost cute

This Merc looks like a toy - though I like it. The BMW is very classic looking.

Thanks for the comparison shots.

I dont mind the looks of either car. I'd be happy to have the SLK in the garage alongside my Z4.

I think the comparison shows the MB has thicker rook and rear quarter panels (they look bulkier and heavier as there is more metal visible in the profile shots, both above the rear wheel and in the C pillar (or is it still a B pillar in a 2 door?)).

It will be interesting to see how much their roof mechanism weighs. It just looks heavier to me.
Not as bad as the bulky bum / roof of the Lexus SC430, but getting up there.

Bring on the road tests...

The SLK isn't that bad looking for a nice roadster. The Z4 looks like an entry level exotic to me.
