Sounds like someone didn't like the Z4...

E89 Z4 exterior was designed by a young BMW female designer named Juliane Blasi

Btw, BMW management board also named Patrcia Ghella-Schroeder a chief design engineer at BMW. She was previously in charge for 5er, 6er & 7er facelift projects. Earlier she had run N62 V8 petrol engine development.

But from what I see, I think they could have done a better job with the front - the headlights, grilles could be better designed and the air-flow intakes and front bumper could have been meaner/more menacing/more purposeful look to them. And as always, too much wheel gap leaving room for the usual mods. Sigh. Can't wait to see the new Z4 M.

Hopefully, this design will grow on me.
You have to consider the face that this is a non-M Z4. Think about it. They're never overly aggressive, and the wheel gap is just like all other non-M's. I think they pulled the bumper design off perfectly, and considering that the facelift usually brings better designs, I'm impressed.

Two things:
1) Both of those designers are awesome, especially that second one. Those were all well done facelifts.
2) It's also extremely unusual to see some who's an engineer move to designing. Usually it's one way or the other, as engineers and designers tend to have very different ways of thinking.

I think that this is the Sport Model and not the base model. The side marker looks like 35 to me. The base will not have as large of rims and the grill will be different (as per spy shots). Those rims are the same as the one's on the car in Germany they have been showing and usually they do not show the base model.... I could be wrong but I do not envision the base model as having rims that large or xenons and the base cars in the previous spy shots all had smaller wheels. But for all we know this could be a one off or something.... for the movie (they did it before!)

Ms Ghella-Schroeder is not a designer, but an engineer.
She didn't designed those facelifts - just being responsible for the complete facelift projects (whole package development).

Design engineer = a link between designers & engineers & even marketing, purchasing, manufacturing incl tool making etc.
She/he has to know what kind of product marketing wants; what purchasing is able to offer; how can it be manufactured (limitations & abilities); what tools are available etc - and then be able to make from a design idea a functional prototype, and a working serial production product. Helluva job.

From what I can tell it looks great. If they make a hardtop version with the S65 engine I'd be all over it.

Uhg. Here's hoping more pics will come soon. Looks like they added some e90 sedan ugliness to the front of the Z4. The Z4 wasn't ever perfect looking in the front, but that wasn't the fix I was hoping for. Hope the M version adds some N/A manliness, an aggressive front, and ditches the electronic e-brake.

well, i like it a lot but i think that hood is maybe little to high near the engine area, but it might be because of the picture quality, overall a great car !

Looks like it has the xdrive style of emblem on the side. Other than that, looks great.

So far, so good. Like the headlamps and grill. Like the proportions. Color looks good on this car. Looks like the 'sDrive35' badge beneath the side gills (who came up with this naming convention?). Looking forward to the full reveal.

Now that is STUNNING. I was doubting the look every step of the way. The spy photos make it look so understated. This just blows away any skepticism i had. I think i'll put a deposit on one tomorrow

+1. I loved how the old Z4 has flow to it. Not feeling the side grills either.

What's going on up yonder on the front fender? Sheesh, it's busier than a 3-legged cat trying to bury turds on a frozen pond. After that, too much missing to pass real judgment at this point. But from the spy shots, I can't stand the roofline, now that it's a folding hardtop. The current coupe's roofline is 1000x better looking IMHO.

1POINT9 - by making a post like this, you just pissed off all the Z4 owners...Not really smart IMHO.

I am going to reserve my judgement until I have a chance to see more photos of the new "Z4". BTW yes the model name is still Z4.

IMHO back in 2003, BMW should have added the Z4 model to the BMW line up instead of replacing the Z3. I believe there was enough market differentiation for 2 roadster models in the line up. Basically BMW admitted that the Z4 model was a lot better than Z3 by ending the Z3 model.

True the Chris Bangle styling is a love it or hate it thing. However, he had BMW corporate support from the top because you see Bangle styling cues through out the entire BMW line up.

FWIW, I like all the BMW Z roadsters, Z1, Z3, Z8...etc..

Also, there is no way the Z3 coupe is better looking than the Z4 coupe.

Just my 2 cents.

Yuck. Better than the current hideous Z4, but not much better.

hardtop?

based on the rest of the light reflections, that looks like a soft top to me!

Agreed about the angle of how the hood meets the grille. I liked the look of Jonsibal's renderings where (hard to say from the front view) the kidneys were molded "into" the bumper. Perhaps I'm being too picky.. but I still like what I see.

Its a hardtop, your being confused by the black (non-body colour) frame around the windshield (as shown in all spy pics thus far) contrasting against the body coloured roof panel.
