Snow Chains for Z4
Hello,
I am driving to Lake Tahoe in few weeks and this is my first none 4WD. May I ask what Snow Chain will fit my stock BMW 2014 28i Z4 tire? I know the tire is non flat tire. |

No need to go for OEM BMW snow chains, right? OEM is normally more expensive.
Just check the size of your tires (tyre width, profile and rim size) and buy some fitting chains. There's various systems around (classic chains, zipping chains, socks, 'stars', etc.). Whatever you choose, just make sure you try them on before you find yourself stuck alongside the road in a blizzard at night with frozen fingers and a car covered in dirty snow and ice and the misses very annoyed in the passenger seat.... Edit: this will help you quite a lot. But you'll need to check your tire size no matter what: https://snowchains.co.uk/snow-chains...e=BMW&model=Z4 Edit2: bring a headlamp. You can thank me later. |

To be fair, I bought my Z4 as a DD in the NE region (NJ to be exact). We were hit with a few days of pretty aggressive snow and I drove it just fine with A/S tires. When I first got the car it snowed and I even went with the OEM summer performance tires not knowing they were summers until after the fact. Again, not recommended but it is definitely not the worse with the proper tire. I can't imagine it being any worse than a non-AWD X1 given you have clearance.

The tire width makes a big difference. As far as I know, however, the X1 has 225 or 255 tires, just like the Z4.
Then there is weight balance; the more weight on the wheels with traction, the better. Not sure how the X1 compares to the Z4 on that. Finally there is obviously the clearance and nature of the car; I suspect an X1 to drive more forgiving than a 28i Z4. That being said; no slushy hiking boots are getting in my Z4! And all the salt and gravel they use on the roads here in winter would be a torture as well to the car. There's a reason I use a 10 year old Toyota RAV4 in winter here in the Alps and leave the Z in the garage for a couple of months. |
