Performance test 35i DCT - data with video

Hi Guys, i have been looking with great interest at posts concerning engine remapping as this is something i might want to do to my 35i.

However, i am somewhat disappointed not to see any empirical evidence of what spending say $1000 on a new map can do.

I see videos of drivers trying to video the speed vs rpm increase, but this is all subjective.

I run a data logger business and decided to see exactly what a stock 35i will do on a dry track (acceleration)

Below are 2 videos showing that BMW quoted 5.1 is in fact right on the money!

Sorry about the bleeps, this is the logger telling me that i have achieved a measurement point.

No Launch control

This is something that is a little way off in the future. However, if somebody is planning the same, and they're not too far from me, i'd be happy to do the necessary for them and post the figures.

Car is SLOW without LC ...were you in Sport+?

I find that even without LC the DCT will slip the clutch a little if you mash the throttle from standstill result in a reasonable launch.

But I have 35is so not sure if the programming is different??

fo the Launch, the car was in the Sports+ and i followed the instructions to push the gas pedal all the way down, LC is not enabled until you click the switch at the end of the throw of the pedal.

Surface was dry, dust free (no sand etc).

The figures are the figures. I wanted to do this test as all other tuning test on the road are so subjective. this test has empirical data with a high level of accuracy.

Only thing missing is multiple test to see the variation of launches with and without LC. As this is MY car and not a press car, i decided that one launch was enough of the day.

Probably a better test would be some acceleration runs in 2nd, 3rd, 4th... 5th gear.

I'm on JB4 map 2 with DPs and DCI and the the difference with respect to stock - in such a kind of runs - is really noticeable. The car is very fast.

On the contrary, i feel the 0-60 times should be "more or less" the same as stock, probably a couple of tenths less (no data, just feeling) for different reasons: 1) JB4 prevent you to use the LC to preserve the DCT 2) the wheels spin is tremendous during launches in 1st gear.

Thats why i decided to collate some data. I don't like subjective analysis as its all seat of the pants information.

Thanks for the info and awesome videos R4R!
Remember to put the roof down for slightly better weight distribution!

Good point. However i was trying to keep the sun of the instruments and prevent glare, otherwise the roof is always down if it not raining.

Hey Dario!

Long time. Hope you are keeping well. Nice to see you back in a Z and its great to see someone taking measurements like this. I would recommend some in gear runs though as it takes launches and traction out of the equation. 60-130 is the standard now. Lots of data out there so you can compare to other cars. I understand this is difficult to without a airstrip or risk of losing your licence!

We have a P-Box and even matching stock press car 0-60 times is a struggle if you don't want to ruin the car.

Imran, I never left. Had my Z4 3.0 for 8 years and went straight in to this 35i

Indeed I have been looking high and low for similar data to your original post. Its oddly suspicious that there no vids of 30-60-90 times. Cant find them on 1m boards either.
