Anyone keeping an eye on resale values?

I'm going through this right now, as I'm try to sell my '09, but it seems like the resale on these cars is dropping like brick thrown off the top of the Empire State Building.

Mine: excellent condition,09, 42k miles, 35i, premium, cold weather, sirius = $26,800 (roughly)

Run yours through KBB or NADA and see what you think. However, the listings on autotrader and cars.com seem to want to maintain higher pricing. Then someone calls regarding the ad and the first words out are: "You know, KBB says the price should be......"

Damn that KBB.

My 2011 30i had an original window sticker of $57K. Three years later 37K miles I'm lucky if I get $27 for it.

Miles and age, or more specifically, the ratio of the two. The higher the miles on an older car like this, assuming excellent condition, the lower the value. I got top dollar for my '08 E85 3.0si (near M roadie price) because in excellent condition at five years of age, I had under 17k miles. The same has been true for all recent BMW roadies going back to the Z3.

Now the 507, on the other hand....

I purchased my pre-owned 2011 35is in Feb 2013 for $45K cash and it only had 14,500 miles and a full warranty. The previous owner was in a lease and he took very good care of it. The original sticker was around $70K. Today it's worth about $40K. It will continue to drop in value as most cars do. I don't plan on selling mine anytime soon.

Personally, I think all the values posted on this thread so far are in line with a typical used car. (i.e. it isn't like 7 series or other large luxury brand cars where the value really craters on the used market)

Unfortunately, the E89 is not like 1 series M, Cayman R or 911 GT3 where the used prices are similar to new prices due to limited production and huge desirability

Yeah for the longest time the values of these cars were high. Now that i bought mne a couple years ago, the value has plummeted. fair not likely as these cars are still very limited but i guess that isnt how the industry sees it.

Unfortunately it is limited production because no one wanted to buy it when new, not because supply was constrained

I passed on the Cayman R and Boxster Spyder due to the higher price tag, but I'm coming around to the thinking that it might actually be less costly to own a limited production Porsche than a cheaper BMW because the depreciation hit is so low.

I bought my 2009 35 i- Manual Trans for 60 and change - when I traded it in - last year - April of 2013 the dealer gave me 29.5 on a new 2014 that was listed at 63,000. I only paid for the new 2014 Orange DCT, with special interior, Hyper Orange Package - with sales tax included 30,000. BTW, the dealer sold my 2009 35i for 35,000 - as I saw the car locally, new from special marks it was my car, the Retired doctor paid 35,000 - so there are people out there what will pay for what they want - its just a matter of finding them -

As Jparnes says- He will drive it till the wheels fall off - so will I ! and the 2009 only had 25,000 miles on it ! but it had RUN FLATS - the new 2014 does not have Run Flats - now my teeth don't chatter when I run over a pencil !

congrats on the new car. Any thoughts on the steering feel or other things between your 09 and 14? If you had gotten the DCT in 09 do you think you would have just kept your old car? or where there other options missing?

Personally, it drives me crazy worrying about depreciation and resale. Life's too short to even think about that-- especially when it comes to a luxury item in my life. If I was that worried about it, I'd just get a Toyota Yaris and be done with it. Since I can't take it with me, I plan to enjoy what I have...

Oh and by the way, there is nothing like the feeling of driving a brand new, first owner Z4 35is off the lot for the first time.... hate to say it, but it was almost worth the hit I took.

Several times, I was caught in Bumper to Bumper traffic for many miles, even though I liked the Manual, and would skip gears often, I decided to give my left foot a rest. DCT is fine, quick and can be operated like a Manual either with the paddles or the Shift selector. I also got the Premium radio on the 2014, big difference over the standard radio -(speakers etc.) - Swapping out the Run Flats even before delivery was another PLUS ! Steering is fine, although I am not a wild driver either ! Plus the paint and Trim, and interior made all the difference - not many Hyper Orange Z-4's around ! Maintenance and and Guarantee was up
near when I changed cars, and with expensive repairs that could be in the offing, it was the right thing to do.

I did like the Turbine wheels - think they are #293 - never had issues of cracking like the 5 spoke wheels - so even when they were not offered on the 2014, I purchased a new set of 293 wheels - had Normal Pilot tires put on, and sold the 2014 wheels and tires as a complete set only taking out the
TPS senders first.

A little off topic but the used car market is out of control. My 19 year old collage son is looking for a used sedan-Accord/Civic, Camry/Corolla, Sonata/Elantra, Altima, etc.
We thought a reasonable price of $3-4K world get him a a car with 100,000 miles and minimal options was the ticket. NO CHANCE.
People are asking and apparently selling cars for $3-4K that have over 200-300000 miles on the clock and then getting and $4-6K for the 150,000 mile cars.
I know the buy back and crushing of used cars during the (do nothing) Stimulus act made an impact on the market but this is ridiculous.
Our (generally ) low mileage cars should be worth a fortune.

My experience has been that KBB value is actually a lot higher than what you would actually get from your car. I find that Edmund's TMV is a better estimator of what you would actually sell your vehicle for - take a look at that, will really give you a shock.

As an example, my vehicle current is estimated for a dealer trade-in at KBB for $40k, but Edmund's only has me at $34k. I tried to trade my vehicle in last year with only 5,000 miles on the clock and I was offered $39k by a BMW dealer. MSRP is a few short of $70k. A year later and 10,000 miles more, it make sense it dropped $3k. I would imagine if I took it in to the same dealer I would get somewhere around the ballpark of low to mid 30s. When I was shopping for pre-owned vehicles, Edmund's also had a more accurate estimate of final sale price.

In regards to japanese car - you are spot on BMWZ4Rider. I have a 1999 Camry with 200,000k on the clock and thought about giving it up as junk metal. Went on eBay, AutoTrader, and Cars and very surprised to see same year, even higher mileage, selling for $3-4grand. (Edmund has me at $400 - what I thought my car was actually worth - and KBB has me at $2,000!) Maybe Edmund is more accurate for Germans KBB that depreciate significantly faster while KBB is more for Japanese that seem to hold their value very well. At $3-4k, I'd just get your son a lightly owned E46 with around 50,000 miles. Those seem to be in the same price range as a 15 year old, 200k mile Camry/Accord.

Personally, I think the old german cars are cheaper because most people shopping in the $3k-$4k range are not considering "luxury" german brands and just want basic transportation

Also, every time I see how $$ those old cars are, and how long people are keeping their old cars, it reminds me how uneven the recovery has been, and some people are still hurting c'mon job creation....

They are worth a fortune. A 4 year old Z4 sells for more than the cost of an average new car. Nobody likes to eat the depreciation, but you get whatever the market will bear. The only way to avoid suffering the loss: don't sell!

My fathers 2001, 3 Xdrive series with 115K on the clock just had the front 1/2shafts, CV boots, cooling fan and some misc gremlins fail to the tune of $3800. Extra OUCH.

When people speak of "bullet proof" BMWs, they are referring to the engine, and just the engine. Not any of the outsourced bolt-on parts. And I think that holds true for most BMW, not just the E46.
