Driving in snow!
In the UK we have just had the biggest snow fall this winter. Wondered if anyone has been out on standard tyres (non winter / snow) - is it worth trying to get out and about? What's the grip / handling like?

Two inches here last night. Slushy this am (North Carolina). Did okay for short two mile trip on all season tires. A couple of little slips. I'd definitely use a different car if the option is available.

came out of work last friday and there was two inches of snow on my car. I have all season RFTs just for that. You need to be a bit more careful as always because of the people around you. I give myself a little more room and switch into manual mode. The people I usually see slipping use their brakes too much in the snow. In ANY VEHICLE you should downshift and use the engine to brake you as much as possible and then brake.
It did fine in the snow, but I was a lot more careful then when I drive my Land Cruiser

Rear wheel drive turbo car. If you have another option do it, but if HAVE to make sure got a nice winter set of tires and take it slow. As other said just best to keep it parked. It just dumped over 2 inchs here in Geneva, wont be driving in days like this, fortunately here the mass transit tram/bus system is top notch. Warm fast and having their own dedicated lanes throughout the town, makes it a great option.

no problems on the winter tires, although I drove around with all seasons last year, I recommend against it if any other option is available. All seasons on this car is NOT safe on snow.

I'm more concerned about the other drivers, as some people don't adjust their driving style when it's snowing or icy. Last year we had a Bentley GT turn in front of us and lost control ending up facing towards us in our lane, fortunately we were in our 4x4 and could brake and negotiate around him. I still remember the look of horror on his face as our Jeep was heading towards him.

I'm curious how some of you guys have all-seasons...don't all our cars come w/ dedicated summers, so why didn't you just buy a set of dedicated winters? I guess you have an extra set of all-seasons lying around and wanted to use it first?

I love it how 2 inches is considered a lot of snow. If we get 2 inches here we don't even notice it :-)
But yeah, snow and summer tires are a potentially deadly combination. |

Since I don't go to the track, I really don't notice any performance hit with the all seasons
