Z4 vs 328I convertible decision
Cross posting from 3 forum. Thanks
Hello All, I had a 2006 Z4 and traded that in for the wifes 328Xi. Now is time from my car. Currently I have a 328I convertible with Prem, Sport and Cold Weather on order. I have demo'ed the 3 series without the Sport package, but have not driven the Z. I am now waffling on changing the order for a Z4. Any insights to how the new Z compares to old Z, thoughts on the 3 vs the Z would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks |

I went from an 07 335i 'vert to a Z4 s35i DCT. The E93 had the Dinan tune. Loved the E93, but I like the Z4 even better. Key question is two seats or two seats plus: if you can live with the smaller car (and the bigger payments), I think you'll find the Z4 much advanced from the E85, especially with DCT. Drive it. Good luck.

I have not driven any of them, but I know wich is more beautiful. Do you need 4 seats? If not, change the order. BR Shadow4 |

Like the Rubber Ducky I am going from a 335i vert with Step to a s30i Z4 but with 6MT. Trunk in the Z4 is equivalent to the 3 series vert but you don't have the option of folding down the back seats for more luggage space. So the biggest decision is whether or not you would ever need seating for more than 2 people. As far as the tranny, no doubt the DCT is a big improvement over both the Steptronic and the old SMG, but if you want a manual and many do, the 6 speed MT in the Z4 is very nice. Throws are nice and short and the ratios are very nicely designed so that all 6 gears are useable with 6th gear being an overdrive for the highway. Either way it's a very nice car.

- The E93 with the fold-down rear seatback is a yuppie pickup truck. No end to what you can carry there with top down (except, perhaps, people, unless they fold small). - Something unexpected in the DCT is the value of 7 gears. In the S35i, these are short (i.e., not tall) gears and extremely versatile, esp. around town. And having gone from 3 gears to 4 to 5 to 6, 7 seemed a bit extreme. Turns out it's not. Very handy. |
