This fell out of my z4, and I can not figure out where it goes to save my life. help
I am the classic definition of idiot, I have to come out and say it because of the question I am posting here. But I am really hopeless at this point. and its not that I dont put in effort trying, its that i really cant figure it out. (It once took me 6 hours to change the oil on my z4 myself, cuz it took about 4 hours for me to find the oil filler cap after everything was done.)
my car is 09 e89 z4. About a month a go, while i was working on something, I picked up this piece of heat shield on the garage floor under my car. my car has been through a lot because of me, the idiot driver. i wasnt surprised it fell out, but I just couldnt figure out where it goes back onto. and now some part of the car has been toasty for a while now. here are the pictures of the heat shield, can anyone please let me know where it belongs. I did look on realoem, while i did find a piece looking like it, but it gives no clue as to where it goes. |

thanks for the response. i am quite some way away from a dealer. i am hoping someone with a similar model 09 e89 3.0i would take a look under the hood or the bottom of the car and give me some clue.
just three hole on the part. looks like an easy reinstallation if i could figure out where it goes |

Did you ever remove the plastic cover under the transmission ? I am guessing that I have seen something like this right next to transmission.

Definitely a heat shield. so you will look at areas between exhaust pipe and engine trans areas.

guys finaly i found out where it goes. did have it jacked up. the piece is kind of not necessary. or at least i could not see why it has to be on the. it appears to be riveted (not very sure, cuz i only have one broken piece of hardware left on the black felt faced plastic backed bottom cover to judge it from) to the bottom cover close to (a foot away from) the passenger side front wheel well. it lays directly on top of the cover, spacially in between the cover and exhaust pipes

Difficult to understand your last post as to location, but the fact that it's "between the cover and exhaust pipes" indicates that it's there to protect the "cover" from exhaust heat. Why would it be 'kind of not necessary"?

but again thats coming from my judgement, which tends to be wrong..haha im just happy i solved that mystery, haha....and not gonna worry too much about it not being installed on the car, cuz i know where it goes now, and it hasnt melted anything yet maybe a good idea to have it riveted back on before the summer, right? |

I believe it is a heat shield between the body/chassis and exhaust. Believe it is located near the rear of the car where the mufflers push against the bottom of the trunk.

Look 8 o'clock from item 9. The item 1 has three depressions. They each have a hole and the plate is riveted on. The rivets rot and the plate falls off. |

that is exactly where it is.........and I guess "the bottom cover" 's official name is Vehichle Encapsulation"... haha.....no one would have been able to find that part through the text search function of the site. did you go under and specifically looked for me? or you just figured that out by the diagram on realoem? i riveted it back on there already, btw. |

I did an oil change recently and removed the bottom cover just to remove mud and dead leaves.
One of the rivets had fallen off so was replaced by a nut and bolt. |
