Refill tank before it's three fourths empty

FYI never let the gas level in your vehicle drop below a quarter tank since the gasoline not only serves as fuel but also as a coolant to the electric fuel pump. Insufficient gas within the fuel tank will lead to degenerative performance and premature wear and potential fuel pump failure due to overheating.

Hmmm. Skeptical about that. Can you show proof or a link?

I had read similar recommendation from some type of tech article/forum - can't remember if it was direct fuel injection specific or BMW specific.

I also heard if you drive at speeds below three fourths top speed, the lack of pressure on the windshield will cause it to pop out prematurely.

All modern bmw has the fuel pump submerged in a fuel bucket that is suspended in the tank. Unless you are running the tank to the last liter of gas, the pump will always be surrounded and cooled by the gasoline around it in that bucket.

Love it when people posts up "facts" when they have no facts to back it up...

The advice came from an ex-fleet manager whose hobby is collecting and rebuilding BMW 2002tiis. Perhaps his experience stems from older BMW models whereas newer models could be different.

these cars have a much better pump design than your average 70's chevy, if there's 1/4 gal left you can be sure it's in the pump basket. I was impressed when I pulled it out, much better engineering than my e36 and e46

My rule is not below a 1/4 tank, that's because I don't want to get stuck by not paying full attention. (which I am often guilty of).

Has worked for many years, so far no run outs.

Took lunch and refilled my tank. Was a bit less than a quarter empty though.

Heh, can't really fault you, given the range of the E92 M3.

I propose a revision to the OP's advice:

FYI never let the gas level in your vehicle drop below a quarter tank since this mother drinks fuel like it's 1969, and yo' ass will run out at the least opportune moment.

The engineer in me says it's completely full. 1/4 full of fuel, 3/4 full of air

It should be completely fuel, 25% liquid, 75% vapour.
