I am wondering how much did you all pay for the BMW tire and wheel insurance.

In Australia I paid $715 for the three years "prestige" coverage.
Pays up to $1400 per year on tyres and $1100 per year on rims.
Here a tyre costs $570 front, $630 rear for OEM bridgestone RFT.
The dealer said he would be able to supply 326M rims at less than $1100 each, so two tyres a year, and one rim per year are covered.

I called yesterday and was told that 5 yr was a little over $1100 (with tax), 4 yr was about $100 less and 3 yr was another $100 less. I'm going Friday AM to buy some and haggle a better deal ....wish me luck

Thanks all Fellows, for your support and input on this matter.

Now about 1000 KM form my house, just entered the State of Wisconsin enjoying a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

The passenger rim is still holding out so far. I did have to go across some very rough spots along I-90 at some point it was so bad I drove on the shoulder with the blinkers on. Little did passerby’s know that I am driving with one wheel having 2 cracks (180 degree opposite from each other BTW). Heck I don’t care as long as I get home.

You might be asking how does he do it with two bad tires and one wheel having 2 cracks, well let me tell you very carefully. Like taking a lady to dinner and a movie in 4 inch high heals avoiding all the rough spots.

I uploaded my last set of photos. I put the camera away, just heading home now and thinking of a story to tell the Canadian Customs Officer about the wheel on my front seat. I am sure I’ll be dinged for duty before it is all said and done. Or should I just roll that piece of junk across the border? Link to photos I put into Album 14, 15 & 16 are here;

Anyway, thanks again fellows for your support. I’ll let you know if I make it home or if I have to call Roadside Assistance.

Cheers,

Rolf-Dieter

Anyways, should the focus be on the tires and their (in)ability to *reasonably* prevent the rims from hitting the pavement? I have no idea.
I don't think that's the noise. At least when I hit a major pot hole, I think the suspension bottoms out (as the tire compresses up into the suspension) and hits a hard stop.

I purchased the 5 yr BMW plan - $1100, when we did the finances prior to leaving to do ED. The brochure states : Covers all tire/wheel damage from metal, nails glass, debris, including potholes. No maximum claims, no claim aggregate. No deductible. Tires are covered to 2/32". Replacement tires (if you wear out the originals) are covered but have to be BMW approved. Covers labor, balancing, disposal, taxes. Tires are replaced not repaired - so new tires. Seemed like a good deal at the time - seems even better now. Like all insurance I would prefer to never have to use it.

I'm going in tomorrow at 8AM to deal on this plan.

For people looking to buy any new BMW: the BMW rim & tire insurance is something you should try your best to negotiate into your deal after you have reached a standstill in initial discount.

I made it safely back home with the two cracks in the passenger side rear wheel and the two badly worn tires on the inside this evening.

Having a glass of wine now and just relaxing the last 3,000 KM of my more then 12,000 KM trip have been nerve racking to say the least.

Monday I shall see what BMW has to say about the crack that spoiled the rest of my trip. Meanwhile I shall enjoy the weekend.

Cheers,

Rolf-Dieter

PS. Last photos have been uploaded. Here is the link. I will report on the trip in more details later.

Rolf-Dieter

Sorry to hear of the issues that marred what should have been a joyous and spirited trip in the Z.

I am also quite sure that those from BMW read this, and other, forums. I am sure that they do not want the brand sullied, and you will be taken care of. Bad press is definitely NOT better than no press at all.

Best of luck with your negotiations.

Rolf-Dieter,
Glad you made it back to the comforts of home. Sorry that it was a rather arduous journey - disappointing to say the least with regard to the wheel issue - but by looking at your pics, it looks like there were some fabulous moments and certainly a story to last a lifetime.

I hope you get some satisfaction from BMW with the matter. You obviously have a captive audience who has a vested interest in you getting to a resolution.
