z4 35is engine vs E92 335is engine

On BMW website the Z4 35is is listed as having direct injection - I thought it was the same non direct injection, non valvetronic, twin turbo engine as the 335is and 1M. I want to get one for my wife possibly. Also does the Z4 35is have the oil cooler fitted as standard as in the other two cars? thanks

List of N54 Z4 roadsters with oil cooler
All Z4 35i and 35is seem to have it, but it is different from the one in the 3-series

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref....=on&series=E89

The 3-series oil cooler (shared between S65, N54 and N55 engines)
I cannot spot any LCI or pre-LCI that does not have it.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref....r=on&details=1

List of cars with the N54 additional left radiator (not oil)
Only 335is and 1-series M coupe. (And BMW PPK stage 2 equipped cars)

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref....=on&showeur=on

List of cars with the 850W fan
Only 1-series M coupe, 335is, 335d (USA only) and M3 (different part number: 17112283621)

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref....r=on&details=1

(Fun fact: The M5/M6 uses a 1kW fan)

List of cars with the 600W fan
All turbo charged Z4s (20i, 28i, 35i and 35is) and many many other BMWs including the M135i

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref....r=on&details=1

Separate DCT Transmission oil cooler
Only M-cars (others use regular heat exchangers)

PS realoem does not seem to know the 135is at all

Hmmm...I had a 2011 35i without an oil cooler and my 2012 has one because I got the M sport package. My understanding was that you needed this option to get this cooler.

Thanks for the great responses. I am more concerned about the oil cooler. It specifically mentions it in 335is specs but not on Z4 35is specs. It does not say valvetronic for the 335is. They both have the N54 with 2 turbos right and not the N55 with single "twin scroll" turbo. This is my understanding. I also thought the N54 was not a valvetronic engine. Still a little confused I guess.

Yes both the Z4 35i and 35is use the N54 with direct injection, 2 turbos and no valvetronic, and it seems none of them will ever get the single-turbo N55 engine.

How did you know the oil cooler was missing on the 2011 model? Did you take any pictures of the engine compartment that can be used for verification?

Here is some more speculation:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52499

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=844728
(the picture of the engine with no oil cooler seems to be an older non-turbo 6-cyl 328i which of course never had any aux oil cooler)

Some confusion might come from this: There is a performance power pack that adds a left side radiator (not an oil cooler) and a 850W fan (but it is not available for the Z4 afaik)

most likely its due it being an LCI with N55 motor, i had an 2007 335 coupe with N54 and it came with oil cooler, at that time dealer was doing retrofits.
possibly N55 guys can chime in on this

2012 Z4 35 still has the N54. My car is regular sport package and has the oil cooler.

If the car is being purchased off the dealer lot it is very easy to tell because you can see the oil cooler in front of the passenger side tire through the bumper cover opening

+1
in the 3-series the N55 has the same oil cooler as the N54, but I thought we were talking about a 35i Z4 without oil cooler. The Z4 was never built with the N55 engine.

Anyway, I wish someone could show a picture of a N54 car without this famous oil cooler. I searched a lot, but haven't been able to find any.

Exactly...all you need to do is look through the front of the right tire well. If the oil cooler is there, there will be perforations in the the well and it is easily visible. It was def not there in my non-Msport 2011 Z4.

What is interesting is that realoem.com is sometimes not accurate.

For example, the F30 328 m sport diagrams do not show the auxiliary radiator in front of the driver side front wheel but a peek into the front bumper of the actual car makes it crystal clear the part is there

I agree that it is not always accurate. The 135is isn't even on there.

But it seems the F30 328 m sport aux radiator is there?

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...49&hg=17&fg=05

It says that you need sport line, M sport or high speed sync (whatever that is) to get it. Interesting!
