I just installed a new battery in my 2006 525 and came across a very easy to use software from the 3er coding forum to register the battery. All you need is a obd2 cable to your laptop. Go to www.bmwsoftware.com/bmwlogger-2
This version of their software is for newer BMWs. It worked great, super easy and takes 2 minutes to register the battery. And it's free!
Note that this will only register a new battery with the same CCA and Ah. If you get a new battery with different specs, this software can't code the car with this new info.

its about time i start seeing software like this. I hope the next version will allow for a little customization just in case you want to move to a slightly higher CCA battery.

Question

So I'm assuming this is true for any brand battery. Not just OE BMW?
BTW: I can't get www.bmwsoftware.com/bmwlogger-2 to work!

Yes, any battery so long as the specs don't change. If they change, then you need more sophisticated sw. like INPA or EDIABAS.
Don't know why you can't make it work. I had no trouble. Is it recognizing your cable? Maybe email from the website. the guy is very responsive.
