Back on the z4 train!
After owning a 2004 BMW z4 with SMG transmission for a short time, i'm back again with a 2010 z4 35i. I love it. It def feels a little more luxerious then the last one and the hard top makes a big difference. Can't wait to drive it more once it gets a little bit warmer here in Kentucky... (We just got iced this morning)
Also is there anything I should look at, get looked at. I'm taking it in just for an inspection tomorrow for some peace of mind. When the tires go I'm thinking about getting all new rims and tires. I'm also interested in the ESS Tune. Anyways here is a pic, I'll try to get more on here shortly |

Congrats! Welcome back.
I think the only "must do" is look into switching our "style 296" wheels and/or RFT due since there seem to be a higher risk of cracking those as compared to other wheels, based on the thread going around this forum. Also, for what it is worth, I think the "linear throttle" maps from Cobb are nice. And the Accessport can log data. |

How has the car been maintained? Any records? If you want to be on top of it, change the engine oil, diff oil, you don't say howmany miles or type of tranny. If 6MT, change the tranny oil at 30K, plugs at 45K, brake fluid x 2 years, coolant x 2 years.

Welcome back, I have driven the Z3 ///M and I owned a 06 E85 so when i switched to the E89 i felt it was certainly a step up. The engineering is certainly more advanced but i think we are even further away from that roadster feel of the ole Z3. Hold on to your seat when you engage the launch control and hit the gas. It will surprise you. Enjoy!

The car does seem to be well maintained, though I only have a few records. It's in good condition from the looks of it, has about 23k miles on it. It's the 7 speed DCT. I took it to work this morning. It was in the 30's and noticed it took quite awhile for the engine to warm up compared to my other car, at first I thought the temperature gauge was broken but then It finally started heating up after about 10min of driving. Is that normal?

The temperature gauge under the tach is oil temperature not coolant. Once the needle is higher than 160F that is considered to be "warmed up". Another way to check if the car is warmed up is whether or not the car will give you an oil level reading (if no, not yet warmed up. if yes, warmed up) Between 160F and 260F oil temp is normal. The thermostat to the oil cooler (if your car has one) opens at 240F so you should expect the oil temp to sit at around 240F when you are cruising. The car goes into power reduction after 260F and "limp mode" at around 290F |

So I took the car in for a "pre purchase vehicle inspection" at my local bmw dealer whcih does a thorough check.
They called back and said the car was in pretty good condition. They did however find some fluid leaks, noting the Valve cover gasket leaking, mechatronics sealing sleeve and spide pan on trans leaking. Luckily they said this was covered under warranty which I was surprised because I bought this car thinking the warranty was up, warranty is good for about another two months. He also said the front wheels were slightly bent which could cause vibration although I haven't noticed anything while driving. Anyways I just dropped the car off tonight and the issues are getting fixed tomorrow. I thought I saw where the valve gasket problem was kind of common in this car. This car has about 22k miles |

Yep. Just ask the service advisor to give you a print out of the repair and service history. They usually have no problem doing this. I always like to have a good idea about what was done to the car before I owned it.
This is not a common problem but my service writer told me that he has seen the mechatronics leak before and they had to replace the DCT. The Ferarri 458 uses the same tranny and they have also experienced leaks. |

As for the valve gasket, I only know one other person with the N54 engine and both of us had to replace it around 55000km (33000mi). BMW said it was a wearable part, and wasn't covered under my CPO warranty.
