Sell it at a loss, that's for sure, but at least he wouldn't be out any cash. Friend of mine has done that before. He had another car, and although it hurt, it was a risk he was willing to take. Maybe doesn't work with an expensive car, don't know. And buying a new car is probably more expensive than paying for a repair. Really depends on the circumstances -- just thought it was another option to consider.

I have lots of thinking and great opinions to consider before 6-30-13.
My former ride, 2008 Acura TL-Type S had $0 issues. However I have to state I only put 8000 miles on it in 4.5 years.

As well and agree, the Bimmer is better quality BUT much more HP and vastly more expensive to repair, if there are issues.

In any case, In my quest to further educate myself, I came up with this info:

In searching for the best deal on the Powertrain Plus and Gold extended warranty for my 2009 Z4 35I I got the below quote from Schaeffer BMW:
Z4 35I
84/70
Powertrain Plus, Msrp is $2180.00, I will sell for $1580.00
Gold Msrp is $3140.00, I will sell for $2540.00

Z4 rider...
is the email jandrews@schaefferbmw.com that the guy you spoke with?
I really concern about buying extended warranty which it is going to expire on Apr.16 for my Z4.
I was asking my local dealer and the price for 7/70 gold warranty is about $3100 something, I didn't have alot the mileage on my car so I think the gold warranty is the best for me. did you get the better deal from this guy??
tks

Yes here is the info from John at Schaeffer BMW.
I asked him why he can sell below the Dist list and he stated simply volume and willing to sell these plans at minimum mark up.

As an FYI as stated my local dealer agreed to meet the price so I am going with them as they will be servicing the car. It's worth asking local BMW dealers.

From John
Current Rates
Powertrain Plus, Msrp is $2180.00, Schaeffer will sell for $1580.00- Save $600 off list
Gold Msrp is $3140.00, Schaeffer will sell for $2540.00- Save $600 off list

After 4-1-13
Powertrain Plus, Msrp is $2310.00, Schaeffer will sell for $1710.00- Up $130. Still save $600 off list
Gold Msrp is $3270.00- Schaeffer will sell for $2670 up $130. Still Save $600 off list

Look, it's a judgement call. My point is that the cost of the warranty plus some additional money added now and then could easily buy some costly repairs. And you get to keep your money in case there are no repairs rather than give it to the insurance company.
And like you said Nick, there's always the chance of being denied due to an exclusion. Then you've wasted your premium and have to cough up lots of dough.
I have to agree with this. Especially when you are saying that you are only driving 2500 to 4000 miles a year. Keep the money, and add to it monthy as was stated. Then you still have the money, and invest it also by the way. Remember, you still have the money if nothing goes wrong as was rightfully stated.

thanks for your information. I sent an email to this guy and hope he will reply me back with some good news.
buying extended warranty is just peace of mind for another 3 years.
you never know what's gonna happend just like I never claim my auto insurance but still keep paying for 11 years till now.
one or two problem might cost more than the price of warranty.

Right on. Peace of Mind.
Great info and opinions from all and again thank you.
For me I Hate to pay it just like, homeowners insurance, as you stated auto insurance, flood insurance, medical insurance, etc. all in hopes of not using it but to defer future costs now.
If I don't buy and then something happens I will upset. As well as I have a good chunk of the premium funds now, as I have 2 kids in college, in which I just finished paying for this this years tuitions bills and have a 2 month Payment reprieve, it makes senses for me, now.

One major difference is that you are required by law to carry auto and home insurance; this is an elective choice. Insurance is a gamble, so you have to weigh your odds.

Question for the OP. Is the mechanical breakdown insurance that you bought through BMW directly or is it through a third party insurer?

If through a third party, is there a clause for using new OEM (not aftermarket, not re-manufactured) parts?

I've always felt like these insured warranties always have some deficiency relative to the OE original 4yr warranty and wanted to get your opinion on this since you've researched it in some depth.

Thanks

The BMW extended warranty doesn't quite cover as much stuff as the new car warranty, but it covers all of the expensive bits.

All,
Attached are copies in PDF format ( sorry 1 is upside down) of the NEW Extended Vehicle Protection Plans and prices which were put in effect on April 1, 2013.
BMW now breaks down the coverage for cars with under 10,000 miles where the prices went down and over 10K miles but less than 50,000 miles where the prices went up.
They break down the plans for cars that are still under the BMW warranty and those that are Out of Warranty, but within the miles outlined above.
They still have the Powertrain Plus, Gold and Platinum each with 5 Years, 6 years or max 7 years and/or 70K and 100K miles.
They now have vehicle categoies A thru G depending on all the models available and priced as such.
My 2009 Z4 35i sDrive with 27,400 miles is listed under category B.
The GOLD coverge on this car increased in price from $3,140 to $3370 or an increase of $230 dollars.
As I outlined in the Thread, I was offered a $600 savings off the MSRP of these plans from Schaeffer BMW, in NC.
I brought this info to my local BMW dealer. He told me that he will sell me the GOLD plan for cost PLUS $50 in June when my BMW warranty plans ends.
My dealer told me that the plan pricing is up to the individual dealer to decide if they want to make money, meet competitive deals, lose money or sell at just above cost. My new plan has a MSRP price of $3,370. I put a deposit on it at what he called "Dealer Cost" of $2,620 plus $50 mark up for a total of $2,670. I saved $700.00 off MSRP.
Dont let the dealer tell you that these plans are firm on MSRP. My dealer said no. Its up to the dealer to set the price they wish to sell these plans at.
FYI

Payment

Do you have to pay all of it at one time? My local dealer quoted a price for the 7/70 Platinum coverage of $700 down and the rest divided over 36 months with no interest.

Update
Just pulled the trigger on my BMW Power Train Plus- GOLD Extended Warranty.
As my manufacturer 4yr/50K warrantry for my 09-35i ends on Sunday, 6-30-13, I waited to the absolute end of my OEM coverage to make the Extended Warranty purchase. I also wanted to make sure that I made the extended warranty purchase before the OEM warranty ended. This saved hundreds more compared to purchasing this plan if the Z was out of warranty.
In any case, I got an even better deal than I originally negotiated with my local dealer.
BMW New pricing effective 4-1-13
PowerTrain Plus GOLD Plan- 84 Month/ 70,000 Miles plan ( This give me 36 months and 56K miles worth of coverage as I only have 28K on the clock.)
BMW MSRP- $3,370
Dealer Cost- $2620
My Cost $2670- $50 over dealer cost- The dealer showed me their complete cost and sell price sheets
Save- $700.00 off MSRP
For me, the $74.16 per month, annualized over the 36 months is cheap insurance to cover virtually all mechancial engine, DCT complete replacement, electrical system, cooling, Convert Top, ETC and virtually any issue that could arise. I can continue to drive the Zed hard when ever I want without worry ( almost) for 3 year and 56K miles.

BTW - we're staying at the Cranberry Inn in Chatham starting 7/8. I'll be looking for you!

Costco quoted me $2284 for a 6/60 coverage starting from the day of contract with a $250 deductible and $2710 for a $100 deductible. Not sure if this is the best I can get but is a start.

The local BMW dealership quoted $3150 for a 7/70 platinum.

Personally I would only take out a warranty with BMW. I've heard of too many stories where the company went out of business and the car owner gets left holding the bag.

Agreed. This is a BMW Only serviced and BMW parts only extended warranty.
Costco while a great store if there is a discrepancy on the services received, parts used, etc. there is not much to negotiate with. The BMW supplied warranty is a known program. Just my opinion.
