Navigation Update?
Hello. 2009 Z4 original navigation version (please see picture attached)
Does anyone know how I go about updating this? I'm assuming there is a software/firmware update for the system itself, and then a separate map update disc I need to buy from the dealer. Thanks in advance. |

Indeed there is an update available....$200 if I'm not mistaken. You can order from your dealer. Think hard about blowing $200....I've had mine since spring of 2010 and frankly speaking, I've never had an address (yet) that hasn't shown up on the map version that shipped with the vehicle.
Other possible updates available for your multimedia and phone: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/nav...gion=&country= Just key in the last 7 digits of your VIN. If you're not presented with a "Continue" button to bring you to the download page, then there's no update available for your vehicle. If it does, then follow the instructions and load to a USB stick and update your car. Dave

Thank you for the response. Apparently there is no USB update available through that web page (even though I can 'Continue' on to the next screen.) Very strange...
I'm assuming the update DVD with the maps has the newest System/Firmware software on it for the navigation unit itself? Thank you again Rudy |

Firmware for the idrive is separate to the maps.
You need a key to update the maps and the map data. There is a dealer fee to update the cars firmware (they do all the cars systems) then another fee for the key and another for the maps. If you wish to risk it there are people on the net that will get you a key at half price then you can download the maps and do it yourself. You must be reasonably technical and put your car on charge while updating as it takes several hours. |

CIC based system do not provide DVD anymore. You need to download the Maps to a thumb drive which can then be uploaded if you have the FSC code. You can buy the FSC code from a lot of folks online for approx $ 50-70. There are forum members who have the map data posted on a share site.
Look for a dude called Sergej on the 3series forum.

IMO, get a Garmin. BMW GPS is visually great, but couldn't find many streets and misguided me more times than it routed me to the correct destination. I wish they offered idrive without the GPS. My Garmin never lets me down.

I could not agree more - looks amazing but GARMIN is infinitely better at actually getting me to my destination.

You have to be careful buying updates for the BMW map upgrades. Often they bring out a year on year basis but new roads etc which have been around for a couple of years are not on the new data base. It seems to take a long time to get a proper map update that is worth the money as you know they are not cheap.... I went to a dealer and asked them to check if an address which I knew was on many other databases was on the new BMW 2012 disc, and guess what it wasn't.....and as mentioned that was two years after the address was added to the postal database......

From what I read, the map updates aren't worth the price you are paying for. I just use Google Navigation. Google always keeps up with the latest mapping data and the live traffic is SO much better.

You can update it for a lot cheaper than $200. I just updated my CIC system using the following thread.

I received an email this week offering an update for Nav system. Interestingly, it was noted as a TomTom update. If you click the link, it takes you to the BMW website. Pre 2010 Z4s must visit dealer for update. Cost for upgrade = $245 US Dollars.

Can be done with free SW download from our sister 3/M series forum and an FSC code for under $100.
