I guess I have to give up manual.. is the DCT fun at least? or it is like tiptronic where you wouldn't really want to shift?

the dct is fantastic. Most of the sports cars and muscle cars I have owned over the years have been manuals. The dct acts in sync with the the normal, sport, and sport plus button. When in normal and the gear shifter in drive, the car acts like a very smooth automatic. Quickly moving through the gears, and very smoothly. If you put the button in sport mode, and move the shifter to the left, the car goes in to "s" mode on the shifter and the shift points are higher and are firmer than previous mode. If you put the car in sport plus, and leave the shifter over to the left without touching it, the car still shifts itself but the shift points are even higher and the shift itself is firmer still. If you change gears yourself by either moving the shifter forward or back, or hitting the paddles on the wheel, the trans shifts from "s" mode to "M" mode. Which you can see on the dash. In sport plus and in "M" mode, you feel like you are piloting a racer, great fun, and wonderful shifts, with exhaust making great sounds also.In this mode you are in control of the shifter as it will not change gears by itself. Its like having four different transmissions, and I would highly recommend it. Its one of my favorite features of the car, and I can see why its being used more and more. I especially like it when im stuck in traffic also.

I think the DCT is the best feature of the Z4 35i as well. The motor is so flexible that you don't need to downshift to accelerate but the DCT makes that so fun and easy I do it all the time. I also run in Manual mode more often than not. From a stop, I upshift with the shifter. It feels just like a manual but no clutch. On the road, I use the paddles. They are especially nice in the twisties, making it easy to downshift before entering a turn and a quick upshift after getting back to speed. Don't worry about the paddles on the wheel. You shouldn't downshift in a turn anyways.

X6M is my brother's (well we both pay the monthly for it) in Montreal which I drive when I'm in town. So I have no idea how it feels yet...
I'll try and get a test drive but the dealership here (Lebanon) are a bunch of assholes who go by the "if you need to drive it to buy it, then we dont want to sell it to you" and no, I'm not joking.. also considering the S5 as an alternative. my 335i is foreign plated (canadian plated) and a new law just passed saying I can't renew my temporary plates (lol 2 years on temp plates) so i need to pay customs of 30,000$.. I can get 35,000$ for my car... 65,000$ + a bit more and I can get either the Z4 or the S5 (Porsche is out of the question unfortunately.. long story and my post is long enough considering I )

In the short time I've had the Z4 (880 miles on it so far),this is the best car I've driven and enjoy driving . I drive with the top down as often as possible. I'm sad when it rains as I leave the car in the garage and take the SUV.
It has all the luxury features I want and the sporty driving I was looking for. No regrets. If I had bought the X6, I know I'd be having second thoughts about that purchase.

I've owned a variety of cars over the last 29 years from European econoboxes (Peugeot 104, Renault 5), Detroit land yacht (1975 Coupe de Ville while in college), a 1984 BMW 325i, some SAAB 900 Turbos, several Jeeps, and more recently a Lexus IS350.
I can't really say if this is the best car I've had since some were very good at what they were designed to do (can't beat a Grand Cherokee for off-road prowess combined with comfort or the Lexus for long drives) but the Z4 is the most engaging and the most fun on the road! I've been inventing every excuse to drive mine during the last 3 weeks to work on my tan and break it in! Last edited by cdeslandes; 04-15-2010 at 09:30 AM.. Reason: I suck at teh spelling |
