35i Whining / Vacuum Cleaner like Noise

Hi everyone,

I have a weird noise coming from engine (or it seems like coming from engine). I can not explain it %100 but sounds like a air leak or turbo. But over 2000 rpms I can not hear it. I don't know if it is not there after 2000 rpm or I can not not hear it bc of other sounds.

Here is a link for the video. https://goo.gl/photos/kdtPFKmp7iqScX1g6

Here is another video (kinda sound record): https://goo.gl/photos/Dbb2a5xbpRQCUqS57

After 50sec you can see upper revs.

2011 35i (BiTurbo)
36k miles
M Package

Do you guys have any idea about that?

Thanks.

Seems to me you just hear the turbos spinning up.

No other issues?

No, no other issues. I drove some other Z4s and this noise was not hearable.

Any mods done on the car?

See if the car will handle a full throttle acceleration test without any problems

Engine at normal operating temp, get in a safe location, Manual mode 3rd gear, cruise at 2,000 RPM

go full pedal and allow the car to accelerate very quickly a few seconds

What happens?

I have the same car and hear the same noise. I always thought it was just the turbos spinning up...

Could it be your in-tank fuel pump? Had a similar issue when the car was about a year old. Took it to the dealer to have it checked. SA said it was normal. After a while the noise became more pronounced (and annoying). Went back to the dealer again and this time they replaced the lpfp. No more noise ever since.

My lpfp makes the whine noise also and is getting replaced. The behavior of my pump noise is constant. It does not vary up and down with the rpm.

Hey, thank you for the answers. The car has no mods.

I tried 3rd gear M mode and accelerate. I didn't feel any issues about accelerating. The noise came through 1500 to 2500 and then it gone. or I couldn't hear it bc of other noises.

I just came back from BMW MountainView, CA. We made a test drive. They heard the noise, but they said that this is normal bc of the spinning turbos. So for now there is nothing to do with it.

Since 2 official BMW and 3 other services said that this is normal, I am trying to not to pay attention on this noise. But THIS IS ANNOYING...

mcbutler, no this is not the one I have. As I understand from this link, it is happening also in N. I have this issue only while driving, no noise when stepping gas on N mode.

here is another video (kinda sound record): https://goo.gl/photos/Dbb2a5xbpRQCUqS57

I bought this car used about 4 months ago. It was around 35k miles, now it is 38k. Unfortunately I test drove the car with top off - inexperienced & unfortunate used car buyer - and with top off you can not hear this noise. This issue is present since I have the car.

So I don't know if there is any mods or not.

i'm still going with this is a "normal" turbo sound. If anything has been done that i mentioned above then the turbo noises are easier to hear. Many people like the mechanical noises of the turbos working. It goes along with great exhaust sounds, etc but certainly isn't everyone's taste.

On a track day, I drove my car slowly by passing a crew loading up an open wheel F1/Indy looking race car. One of the guys looked up and said "hear that?" to the group and one of the younger kids heard my car spool up/whine/etc and I heard him say "That's the kinda car I want!"

not for everyone, but to some its everything

so if I want to revert this back, I have to find out what mods have been done I can end up with a stock car and a "normal" turbo sound though...

ok, I will try to enjoy this noise from now on.

Finding the mods should be quite easy, as they are typically the intake tubing/air cleaner/intercooler/downpipes - with the air cleaner/blow off valve making the majority of the "noise".

Plenty of pics as to what all of these look like on the web...

That is not a good sound

The Hoover sound is not normal . Sounds terrible . You have an intake leak.

How to make sure if this is about intake? One service made a smog check to see if there is a leak. They said they couldnt find any leak.

Hoover sound

Listening to that recording is all I am going by. I had a car that sounded like that and a rubber line was split. Hope you find it . I don't think it is normal but hard to tell from a recording.
