sun visor-spring broken?

The passenger side one if that matters. When it was being pulled down, heard a large 'SNAP' like an internal spring broke or something. There is still some tension when moving the visor but not as taut as the undamaged one. Have you guys come across this and can I open it up to fix myself? Tx.

no but i get most parts from GetBMWparts.com Look for interior parts and i suspect you can find a replacement visor.

I tried to fix it myself but noticed they use some proprietary? 6-pointed screw? Can I find the driver somewhere at Home Depot or something?

Called a torx bit. They are used all over the car. Buy a set of screw driver bits so you can work on things more difficult than a sun visor when the time comes.

Go to Amazon and search on "torx bit set" and you will see some options.

No pita - Torx screws are very common here and have several advantages over hex, cross head and of cours flat head screws (http://bit.ly/2dGMHTZ)

These are not security screws. These screws are used on everything. I use them in woodworking and home improvement projects a lot.

Life is more than terrible Philips head screws!
