BMW Spokesman: No ///M version of the E89 Z4

A BMW spokesman talking with iMotorMag states that there is no business case for making an M Roadster/M Coupe based on the Z4 due to the poor economic climate.

However, the good news is that they do reveal that BMW is planning an M Sport package which will include a body kit, large alloy wheels, tuned suspension and an M-branded steering wheel. In the cards is talk of an ECU remap upgrade to boost engine output of the 3.0-litre twin-turbo by an extra 20hp taking the total to 326hp.

BMW made similarly strong statements with the E85 Z4 as well but finally caved in after a few years of enthusiast demands -- so i'm not ruling it out personally....

Saw this 1st drive report, and they quote Heinz Krusche as saying you'll have to wait for the ///M version for the really stiff suspension.

http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2009...-drive-bmw-z4/

With 5 sec 0-60, I'm not sure there is a business case to build a ///M version.

Especially if the 3.5 version is starting at $52K

This seemed to be the last Samurai before BMW shifting its strategy to new generation of light weight turbo-4 and turbo-6 for future models.

I would read it as "no business case at the moment... due to the current economic climate". Give it a year or two when hopefully things will be better and there could be a complete change of strategy.

I pretty much figured their would be no Z4 M with the new model.
Not surprising really since the N54 engine is easily tuned to make equal horsepower to the 4.0 V8 anyway (and a bunch more torque than the V8)
Couple that with the fact the NA V8's is most likely going bye-bye in the next M3 (2012 MY), AND the terrible sales they had with the prior Z4 M and it was a no surprise they would not put the V8 in the new Z4.

As I've said, make the next M 3 series with a TT 3.5 I6 that revs to 7500 rpm and weighs 100 lbs less than the current M 3 series and then they can put that engine in the next Z4 M and it will sell.

Ooh, an M-branded steering wheel! That's about as exciting as a Tijuana colonoscopy.

But the report is probably valid, they sold VERY few of the previous Z-car in M trim, and with the new car's new direction (boulevardier/cruiser/chick car/technology overload), the M market might be even smaller.

Yawn. I'm paying off my '07 E86 and keeping it forever. Harrrrumph!

Make it 8200+ and it would be good, anything less

Cheers,

not sure.. landscape is changing, the crisis is only accelerating an ongoing evolution , EU pollution targets , new customer expectations, etc.. z4 will also embark a diesel, no reason why bmw spokesperson would be bullshiting,

how hard can it be for a bunch of german engineers to lift the motor out of the M3 and into the Z4 and add the DCT and some fancy suspension and big brakes.

We all wish it were that easy...BMW can certainly do it but there is one problem, the engine bay/chassis can't fit the M3 v-8 according to some reports.

Guess time will tell if they stick to their guns on this. The only way they will get any of my money is if it comes in a M variant. I was so impressed with what I have seen so far that I was already salivating at the thought of a M Roadster or Coupe.

It already is going to have the DCT from what I have read. I wish my girlfriend's 335xi had DCT rather than the 6sp autobox.

I thought the V8 was being phased out, with the view that twin turbo's are a better approach...?

I second you on that one, I will be paying off my 2007 E85 as well and keep it. A true roadster, must be light, extremely manuverable, fun to drive, quick top operation, and must be GERMAN (lol) no offense to our japanese brothers. The E89 is a great car no question about that, but the roadster in its essence have changed with this car: it weighs about 300-500lbs more which is not a good attribute for a roadster, it makes it too heavy for what it suppose to do and that has been confirmed by the test drives, it is fun to drive but not roadster fun. and to spend $54k plus for the base model!!!!! I think thats too much. At the end its a 2 Seater.
