Ordered new wheels/tires: Thoughts?

Hi guys.

2014 White Z4 28i with the stock 17s.

I just ordered:

VMR 710 Wheels in Gunmetal
19x8.5 front 35 offset
19x9.5 rear 40 offset

Toyo Proxes 4 Plus
F: 235 - 35 - 19
R: 265 - 30- 19

I live in FL, and this car will never see snow. But she sees heat and rain.

What are your thoughts for all you experts out there? I did want to get good milage out of new tires. These are 560 A A.

Well, you all ready bought the tires, so it's a moot point, but Tire Rack has reviews and ratings on all tires so you can check out your tires and see how they fare.
Those wheels are awesome though.

Yes I ordered them... but the dealer said that I can change my mind and change the order. Also they come with a 45 day/500 mile satisfaction guarantee. If I don't like them during that time, I can return the tires at no charge. That's from Toyo.

Are the VMR 710 like CSL replicas?

AWESOME - we have the exact same wheel but in hyper silver. Please post pictures once on the car! The mileage is certain to be much better than the RFTs.

I think so. Here they are on a 1 series in the color I'm getting.

Of course I'll post pics with mine when I get them installed!

Personally, in that climate I would go with a full summer tire that is focused on performance. Stuff like Star Spec II, RE11, PSS, and even R888 or AD08

It would be interesting to see if you lose grip vs. the stock RFT. Not sure I would risk that performance loss to try for a few MPG, or a few more miles of tread life, or whatever the benefit of such a hard compound tire might be.

The Star Spec = No made for rim size
RE 11 = Not made for for rear wheel 265x30x19
R888 = Threadlife rating is very low
AD08 = low threadlife as well.
PSS= Very expensive $$$$

I may end up with the Hankook Ventus V12 if I don't like the Proxes 4 Plus.

That's because they are all out performance tires (i.e. streetable r compounds) that prioritize dry grip.

I understand that is not for everyone but I have to ask, is good tread life and ride comfort worth that much that you would risk having less grip than the stock tires?

It is like buying a chip to drive around in valet mode all the time to save gas

EDIT: order your wheels in the 18" size for less weight and to make some of those other tires available!

The wheels are 19s.... that order is not exchangeable without paying $$$ shipping return cost to get the 18s. So sticking with that.

I should have done a bit more homework. But I'll try out the Proxes for a few weeks, then swap them out to Hankooks Ventus V12 (summer tire) at no extra cost if I don't like the grip.

But I appreciate the feedback. That's why I started this post.

Also, I am making huge assumptions about your usage pattern.

One of my colleagues switched his 135 from RFT to PSS and he only noticed the quiet / comfortable ride because he doesn't corner hard enough to even tax the stock tires.

If you are in that usage group then pretty much all of what I said is irrelevant and enjoy having 1 set of tires for 4 years!

I realize that the MPSS are expensive but they are by far the best tire out there. There is not a close 2nd.

you could not be more correct . . . . and, the Micheline PSS will last at least twice as long as the stock RFT the car came with. so, the PSS is really a smoking deal in that it is cheaper than the oem RFT and it last twice as long!

uggggggggg...

I went to get the wheels installed today, and they were the wrong color!

We ordered the Gunmetal and they sent the Flat Blacks. Looked good on the car, but not the color I was shooting for. So they are being sent back.

Looks like another week of waiting.
