2012 Z4 28i - USA

Hi – new to this forum, and thought you might like to see some photos of a nearly fresh-off-the-boat 2012 Z4 28i, among the first cars to reach U.S. soil from this new production run. Placed the order on August 29, and drove the car home from the dealer yesterday (October 8), so less than six weeks to an eastern U.S. final destination.

This Z4 is Space Gray Metallic, with black leather and dark wood interior trim, plus these U.S. options: Premium package, Sport package (which includes the adaptive M suspension, 18” wheels, and sport seats), Cold Weather package, and iDrive Navigation.

The new 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbo engine seems at least as peppy as the inline 6 that I originally test-drove, and the new 8-speed automatic transmission shifts crisply – the two are a nice responsive combination. For those of you interested, the angel eyes are still halogen rather than LED. The only interior change is the new paddle shifters, though I think this specific wood trim is a new Z4 choice for 2012.

28i gas mileage update

I’ve made a couple of longer drives in the last week, totaling about 500 miles. The roads were a mix of 60% freeway (75-80 mph in “Comfort” mode, flat terrain or rolling hills) and 40% highway (55-65 mph in “Sport” mode, with some winding Appalachian mountain terrain, and some slower traveling through towns). The car carried two people and was completely packed with luggage. Average mileage with premium gas was about 35 mpg (top up on the first trip) and 33 mpg (top down on the second trip).

Hello wgoldman

Welcome to the Forum and Congratulations on the purchase.

Can you post some interior shots of the dash? Thanks.

Here you go: the engine bay and the dash. The interior shot captures the new wood trim rather accurately.

The engine seems so small, and pushed back. It probably helps with the handling, even if it is about the same weight.

How are you liking it so far?

I wish I had some extended experience with the Z4 30i so that I could make a useful comparison to the 2009-11 models. But what I can say at this point is that the car is incredibly responsive throughout the entire range of my driving speeds; of course, the 8-speed transmission may deserve some credit for that. There always seems to be a lot of instant reserve power when needed for passing/merging/maneuvering, and I have not experienced any turbo lag. The driving is particularly fun in "Sport" mode, and the changes in shift points, tightness of the steering, handling around curves, and even exhaust note are all very noticeable . . . it feels and sounds like a different car compared to driving in "Comfort" mode. Unless I am on bumpier slow roads or on open freeway, I am driving in "Sport," and this leaves me feeling that the power of the 28i engine is well-matched for this size car in normal driving.

I'm still shopping around. Here in Montreal there are still 2011 models available and no 2012's until early next year. I have test driven the 30 and the 35, and noticed a very big difference, to the point that the 30 would just not fit my driving style and what I'm looking to get out of the car. I wonder where the 28 would fit in.

I'm glad your enjoying your ride!

Cool! How is the 8speed auto? Does it shift faster than a human can shift a manual?

Faster than I can shift a manual, whether in full auto or with the paddle shifters in M.

Very sharp looking Z. I am also more than curious about the difference in acceleration across the rpm's. All I know is the turbo 4 has less hp, but more torque than the I6 motors. Must be an interesting if not thrilling ride!
