Real Carbon fiber roof for E89

Just talked to Duke Dynamic , company who makes CF body parts for BMW including CF Hood and trunk for E89. Here his quote

Yeah, if there is enough interest then we can make the carbon fiber roof (2 pieces). We need at least 2 buyers for the carbon fiber roof, cause there is a lot of works involve to make a nice and clean carbon fiber roof. If you look inside your roof there is a lot of holes and mechanical parts for the roof that need to be transfer to the CF roof.

Here is the current estimate cost, Lead time 4-5 weeks.
Carbon Fiber Roof -Two separate pieces will cost around $3500 + shipping.

Let me know what do you think
.

Anyone interest please contact them sales@dukedynamics.com

seems like a hell of an expensive way to save very little weight over the aluminum roof.

way too expensive, get a CF overlay if you want the looks and be done with it. weight savings are not worth the $$$

How do you intend swapping the roof panels over? complete nightmare if you ask me, I wouldn't even trust a BMW garage to do it right at first attempt. I'm thinking torrential leaks

Coming from a manufacturing background I would say that the price is quite fair as they would need to create a new moulding for it which can get quite expensive and the minimum order quantity is only 2 to start this project off so they probably won't be making a whole lot on the first 2 sale maybe break even at best but they are offering unique stuff for us in the community so they have my respect.

Having said that I agree with you all that the leaks and installation will probably be a huge pain.

I agree with your comment
If we create a group buy, we can negotiate the lower price

I don't think anyone was claiming the price wasn't fair. We all know carbon fiber is expensive. I think most just thought it was too expensive for any benefit they would see from it.

Even if you were able to get a "group buy" price down to $2500, you probably face another $1500-3000 in R&R installation & seal costs along with the great unknown leak factor. Now looking at an exchange cost in the area of $4K - 6K for something you hope won't leak like a sieve. I agree with an earlier comment of CF wrap as being a substancially more cost and functionally effective solution.

I talked to a guy do the who real CF wrap. They need to remove the whole roof and need high temp in the process of resin coating. Leaking issue was the concern and nobody dare to remove the roof. The cost of CF wrap is also enormous.

I think you came up with a great idea to your carbon fiber roof perdicament as well - I read many reviews that "3M Carbon Fiber vinyl wrap" is also great looking product.
