Update:
I've launched a kickstarter. If your interested then now is your change to help get this off the ground.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...-wallet-keyfob

Do you have comfort access? Do you hate having a multiple keyfob's in your pocket? Do you think your key fob is too big? Do you just want something different then what the majority have? Well, that's me. I wanted a key fob in my wallet instead of on a keyring. I made a prototype and proved the proof of concept. I have had my key fob in my wallet since Feb 2016. I was content to leave it this way. Recently, I've been asked to make one for someone else. I decided to look into getting this manufactured. 3D printing is the other option. It's going to depend on interest. I can get 10+ made for a decent price and it will include silkscreening the //M logo or BMW logo. Less than 10 and the price goes up substantially.

This unit has no button holes. It's too thin for that to be an option and the buttons will have to be removed. This is why I started with Comfort Access owners. I tried it with buttons and the plastic kept splitting as it was too thin. The only way to do it would be to make it thicker or completely move the buttons.

Keyfob dimensions.
85mm x 50mm x 7mm (that's about a 1/4" in thickness.)
Stock key fob is ~18mm thick.

Price would end up around $150-200 if made in bulk.

*Note: I am not a forum sponsor. IF I get the interest to make a batch then I will pursue the actions I need to stay on the up & up with the forum.

That's actually pretty cool.

Do you have to gut the PCB and the battery from the stock fob and put it into what you're making, or do you have your own PCB that is programmable?

Original PCB. Different battery though. The stock one is a 2354 which is 5.4mm thick. It would be a serious feat to get that to fit in a 7mm case. I used a CR2032.

Here's an idea: Why not make a phone case out of it, or stick that thing to the back of your phone?

I so want this. I hate having a bulky key in my pocket, especially since I never take it out with comfort access. I am definitely interested. I assume you need to gut one of the original key fobs?

I believe that's happening with a car mfg that I can't remember. You pair the phone or account with the car. Hey we pay with Google wallet nowadays so...it's coming.

I'm surprised and disappointed that BMW still comes with chunky fobs. My weekend car RX8 GT comes with CA in a credit card format. Even has a flat spare key tucked inside. And that's a 10 yr old car!

Kudos to op for this idea. Chunky keys don't belong in today's skinny jeans metro sexual fashion.

+1 for this idea!
BUT there's soooo many different phones and covers.
How about 2 different sizes of your card? One that fits in a wallet and the smallest possible, trimmed down size for your pocket. I'd be a buyer of the latter.

Yes, the original board comes out. Buttons get removed and wires connect to the original battery connections to the new battery connections.

Since this is 7mm thick that would effectively double the thickness of newer phones. I don't believe most people would be willing to do that (including myself). Let's not forget if you lose your phone you can't use your car... Yes the same could be said if you lose your wallet, but I've never lost my wallet and this guarantees you won't leave somewhere without it.

Quick creation of one that would be in the pocket.

Dimensions

35 x 85 x 7mm.

Height is a little longer. Width is a little smaller. Thickness is way down (~18mm stock!)

Mercedes has one for their version of Comfort Access, called Keyless Go. Its a good idea. I like what you're doing. BMW should follow your thinking.

Better view of the keyring hole.

Looks great! Lemme know if it goes through to production! I bet there's a few guys over on the F8X forum that would like one with the "M".

I'd be very interested. My old Mazdaspeed6 had the same card type fob that Gamb1t posted and that was the best one I ever used.

I put my first prototype together Feb 6th 2016. That first battery was an old one out of a IR remote and went low within a month. Luckily the car tells you the battery is getting low. Current battery has been used since March of 2016.
