Most of the software is downloaded from the net direct to the car so it is conceivable that any BMW dealer that wants to could be licensed to install it. Just like in North America.
Good Luck

question for Rubber Ducky: the fine print says that the hp is 385 (with a free flow exhaust).....any idea what it is with a stock E89 exhaust? and is there even an exhaust mod for the E89, I haven't seen one but I'm blind half the time

1. Dinan appears to run through franchises, some of which are with BMW dealerships. Doubt they'd be up for a one-off arrangement - would need full franchise.

2. Beats me what Dinan Stage II HP might be with stock exhaust, but have yet to find a road situation where this could be legally tested. I doubt one gets anywhere near boost/torque/HP limits in any reasonable driving - the runway is just too short to stay with WOT for very long at all.

she would give you the keys if she thought you'd pet her or give her a cookie. I used to have two of these furry devils, lost my male last year to Cancer. He was an even bigger goof...

I get some funny looks when she rides with me, sitting up in the front seat...

I've got to do this with my male German Shepherd some time. That'd raise some eyebrows.

I will have the Dinan Stage II software installed on the car as soon as they have an updated version for my new ECU software.

A Stett FMIC and Diverter Valves are being put in as we speak.

So that along with my cat-back Eisenmann exhaust, should be close to Dinan's hp rating or if not even more. I will also put the car on a Dyno to see the exact figures.

very exciting: my wife's Stett FMIC and Charge Pipe/Diverter Valves, ESS Stage II tune, and Eisenmann 2x90mm Race Exhaust have yielded awesome power - she loves it; the FMIC makes a definite difference as that was installed a few weeks after the other mods - you notice as the RPMs increase and there is no fall off in power. i hope you dyno the car so i can have a real idea of the power the Z is now putting to the ground

I just had the new BMW software installed(REV 761 ?) and then sent the ECU to Dinan in California because they can do it on the bench but not on the "Net yet. I had rev 759 before and the dinan was not written for it. It took less than a week. The BMW software upgrade cost me $135

How exactly you get the BMW software upgrade? Is that something "official" and what is that it brings to the car?

The BMW software is the operating system for the car (comparing it to a computer like a PC or a MAC) and every once in a while it needs a tweak to make things run better. Just like upgrading your OS on a computer or getting a patch form Microsoft. BMW will install any upgrade for free if they are installing a part that requires programming such as a water pump etc. If there is no such BMW "need" to upgrade the software you can get it done at your own cost. My cost was $135 CDN.

The dinan software for the E89 was written to communicate with the previous rev and when BMW issued the latest rev, the Dinan software would not talk to it so they had to write an update for the newest version.

This is interesting that your car would even run after the BMW flash, then having to do a new Dinan flash on top of it. The reason I ask is I've been wondering how Dinan's software actually works, or more to the point, what specific areas of the ECU does it touch.

I initially assumed that flashing the ECU overwrote the entire instruction set programed into it at the time. What it sounds like is Dinan's flash is process specific. Boiled down even further, it sounds like his changes are "surgical" and address engine processes only and don't necessarily touch areas like dynamic damper control.

So, when BMW flashed you ECU with an update it was likely a "patch" (to use PC computer jargon) and only wrote new routines into specific memory registers of the ECU, as well. That's why Dinan's flash could still reside on the ECU. But, because BMW revision changed some things Dinan's surgically modified subroutines expected to see, but weren't there anymore or behaved differently, it had to be rewritten as well.

It may seem like a long way around to get to my real question and that is this. BMW went to lot of trouble to rewrite the 35is ECU instruction set to provide improvements in the areas of engine performance, steering feel, DCT shift patters, dynamic damper control, etc. However, Dinan's Stage II flash is better than BMW engine improvements. But one wouldn't want to loose the other improvements, so I think the answer to my question is the other improvements would not be lost with a Dinan flash.

Thanks

I believe that the Dinan flash is ECU specific and tweaks a lot of things. I doubt if it goes anywhere near the damper controls or other items.

Note: I did not have the Dinan remap before the BMW rev upgrade.

I had to reprogram all my "keys" and the radio but that's due to the BMW upgrade. whatever it really is, I'm very happy with the results in my 35i. I have to be a bit more careful with the gas pedal now, much like my old M3 and the exhaust note is wonderful. It almost burbles like a Z06 vett on header bypass. Not quite as deep but very sweet nonetheless. The shifts on the DCT in sport mode sound like the shifts used to sound in sport +, it feels like someone installed an Msport switch and I love it.

I can only say that whatever Rubber Ducky said, I totally agree with it.

I'm tempted to say all the things I believe in (e.g., Sarah Palin is an idiot) but won't abuse our friendship...

When I had my E93 with Dinan flash, dealer had to reprogram it with an update that cured a coding defect affecting acceleration (big recall). After had to then reprogram Dinan on top of it at Dinan dealer. No charge.

In general, if your car is running well, get alongside your service advisor and tell him to kill anyone in the shop who tries to reprogram the ECU. Mine understands, backs me.

WE have two dealerships in town, both have the same owner. One is a Dinan outlet and the other isn't so I have a friendly ear to bend if needed. Unfortunately the BMW/Dinan place is the opposite side of town and the other one is 5 minutes away. Damn...

There's a lady in my iDrive too, but she never says please or thanks, so I don't think she's very nice.
