Heh. I hear that. I had MGB's for a while back when they were just used cars. The only time I really enjoyed the roadster was in the cold months. Scarf around the neck, tonneau stretched across the empty passenger seat, heat cranked up, and a drive under the stars.

Me too, well, I mean I like topdown for anything other that 'freaking sun bearing down on you' conditions. I personally don't get that, getting baked in your car lol. I do appreciate the open-air and hearing the exhaust, that's a great feeling, but not w/ the super-heat/sun exposure. To each their own.

I hear you.. I lived in Texas and had a Fiat at the time and when it was really hot I too left the top up. I'm lucky now as I live on the coast in California and I drive around all the time with it down as the climate is really mild here through most of the year.

I like this one better. I just wish they would tone down the kidney grill somehow.

This looks so much better to me:

or even just black:

True, but hasn't that kinda been what BMW has been doing lately?

Seems that way.

But I like the Z4, and an evolution would be welcome rather than an overhall.

BUT!

The purists will say....the Z4 was a departure from the Z3 both in design and mantra so therefore if the Z5 is to be a new design then is should be a further design departure from the Z4.

Update: January 23, 2017

The Z5 hits the snow for cold climate testing, showing the same tail light design as seen in the previously spied prototype from the German Autobahn.

I'm sure the car will look good. In sure the car will have incredible lap times.

But being on a shared Toyota platform takes the edge off for a lot of people that like driving a German engineered bmw imo. The size and proportions are also very un bmw in terms of a sports car.

People that really want a long nose roadster to be seen in, they goto benz. For people that's want the joy f driving with proper proportions they goto boxster.

I'm just having trouble seeing where this will actually fit into the bmw ethos. If they just want to make yet another roadster that looks good, fine, but don't expect to get that many sales and even less true believers. True believers are what you need like the z3 had.

Bmw owned the world of small cars that did what big cars can do. Why walk away from that to just become generic. Now you can't leave the world of generic out of fear of sales loss. Fear so crippling you resort to platform sharing with Toyota. Do something bold, the blueprint for success is after all sitting there in the bmw museum.

Making everything on the cheap catches up with you and all the styling in the world can't save you. Pretty much every American manufacturer figured this out about 10 years ago.

What BMW models are boring?
Compared to F35 from US Army? Compared to F1 cars?
If you state something, be more precise!
The next Z5 will be the direct rival of the Boxster and TT Roadster, cars that are on top in this segment.
With its ultra light chassis there are very good chances that the bimmer will be on top. It will have the 6 cyl B58 as an M Performance version so I think we'll have a great alternative to the super agile M2/ more expensive/ exclusive too

Even if the Boxster loses another two cylinders, the BMW won't compete. Three shots and three misses isn't a strong track record. And the TT convertible is just silly.

The advantages of platform sharing are the lower final price, a more advanced chassis, a real chance to develop a car better than the Boxster or TT Roadster.
The final product will be totally different than the Toyota Brother, so I don't see any disadvantage here

That would be a nice surprise. Having owned a Z3 M Coupe and driven all the others (aside from the Z1), I'd love to see BMW get back to building a competitive car against Porsche.

Same taillight camouflage you mean...

There's just no good reason to try and make assumptions about any BMW headlight or taillight design on a mule right now. The shape and design is always disguised with non OE lamps and whether or not they will be LED fronts or OLED rears pretty much just leads to disappointment

Snow driving with no drifting shows the hint it's probably AWD.
