BMW Z2: New reports about its future

Reports out of germany are surfacing about the Z2.

The car will be based off the 1-series in order to create a very light and fast on its feet roadster which which come exclusivly in a ragtop configuration in order to keep weight down and to distance itself from its older Z4 brother which is moving to a convertable hardtop design. Some of the plans are even calling for a purely manual top in order to further reduce weight (although an automatic top function will likely be available as an option).

Going along these lines, the car will be designed around the company's versatile 4 cylinder engine lines including the 1.6l that will be shared between BMW, Mini and Peugeot.

In terms of styling this car is said to be very sharply designed and will make the current Z4 look like a bubble, the angles will be as razor sharp as possible, and the car will be very distinctive. This part of the report is the most speculative and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Hopes are the car would be come out in 2011 and the BMW board of directors is set to make a final decision on this car within the next few months.

I hope the board approves this car. The next Z4 is goin to be even more expensive. Would be nice to see a more affordable bare bones tossable roadster. Would be like BMWs version of the S2000 hopefully. Perfect car for me.

So it'll be competing with what now?

A Miata? An S2000? An Elise?

Can't be a TT fighter, nor a Boxster competitor.

Sounds like it'll be in a class of its own.

Well I like it. I had an 01 miata and the car is one of my all time fav's. I can't wait to see the z2 when it becomes a reality. If it looks as good as this latest rendition, I'll save a spot for the m version in my garage.

this picture is photoshoped lol. Any ways its cool but reminds me toooo much of the miata which is a kinda downfall but i assume itll look better if it does get released. and the M version of it would probably look insane and preform pretty nicely.

I realize its a photoshop pic but I like it. I don't see too much similarity to the miata. If I read the Car & Driver article correctly the miata is one of the cars targeted by the Z2. Light and agile is a great combination that has worked for cars like the miata and its inspiration the lotus elan.
Some have commented that it (the Z2) seems like a step backwards, but I don't think so. I think BMW is simply trying to increase sales of the two seater part of their business. And plan to offer at least two such cars. Which is good news for all of us.

Wht makes this so stupid is that BMW has been down this road before, and not too long ago. The Z3 was supposed to be their Miata competitor, and was caught in a Catch-22 - it was too expensive to attract Miata buyers and too slow to woo Boxster buyers. BMW added the 6-cylinder engines as quickly as possible.

Nothing has changed since then. The Z2 can't compete with the Miata and Solstice market unless it's close to their price range, and there's no way it will be that cheap. The Z4 will bump up inprice like the 3-series did, the Z2 will cost as much as the Z4 Mk1 the way the 1-series costs what the E46s did, and once again you've got a car that overpriced and underpowered.

I agree with the comments on the Z3, but I understand that the entry level Z2 will be under $30,000.

I would agree with you except for one thing. In Canada, a fully loaded MX-5 GT with the PRHT is 45K. I think BMW can come up with a Z2 in that range.

Hope this gets the greenlight. Not that photoshop, but the car.

A nice true small roadster with the Mini Cooper S engine would be awesome.

If the board hasn't approved it yet, it will be hard to get it to market in two years. That would be a miracle in itself.

I wonder if it will be cheaper than a 1 series convert.
