Thinking about getting rid of cable - what are my options? (Netflix, Hulu)?

Thanks for reading.

Long story short - current cable bill is $200+ (way too much when I consider how little tv I watch...1,000 channels, only watch 5). Cable bill includes Internet & Alarm.

Thinking of cutting cable completely and didn't really know what other options are out there as honestly I've never looked.

Thinking of just going Netflix or Hulu streaming service. Only question is how do I get CNN or ESPN with anything other than cable or dish?

I'm so out of touch with what's out there now-a-days

Any help is appreciated!

I stream all of my content (via an Apple TV): mostly Netflix, Youtube and TedTalks...I'm also hardly home so burning through content isn't much of an issue.

Back when I had cable, 50% of the time the TV on was just for background noise. I'm finding more meaningful content now that I have to actively search for a series or show.

I feel like PS Vue is the best deal at $30 IF you already have a PS3/4. I have Netflix 4k and Amazon Prime. That with internet costs me about $120 a month. I still have too much to watch and if I could get OTA channels I would get rid of PS Vue.

Our setup is this:
Pay for high speed internet $65/mo
Purchase Roku 3 streaming box. $100 one time cost.
Netflix $13/no
Sling $25-30/no
Amazon Prime too, but I don't count that towards tv.

We get plenty of shows and movies through Netflix. Sling ous pretty much like cable tv, but you may have to get on of the pricier packages like we have. Amazon is ok. Then roku channels for red bull, wsj, etc. Music too if you run it through a receiver and in home stereo is nice.

All in all plenty to watch, current and for about $105 a month. Equipment (roku and HDMI cable) payoff in a couple months.

I cut the cable years ago. I use YouTube and have HD antenna (maybe about 20-30 channels in 1080). Content I watch on YT is updated daily and there are Live channels there too. There is also YouTube TV now for extra $, but I don't need it.

I had Amazon Prime for 6 month and have access to Netflix for free. Almost never used those services besides watching some Top Gear

ESPN app had some flaw for a while, I was able to access live and cable content with only internet subscription. I think it's fixed now though, but you still have some HD stuff. There was a soccer tournament, they released matches right after they aired live

Very interesting...I've never looked into the fire stick but I'll definitely check it out!

I have an xbox but it'll be in a different room. I have Netflix through a friend (I just log in once a month when I want to watch something).

Great insight.

I think I'll be in the same position as you.

I'm thinking:
  • Internet - $60
  • Sling TV - $25
  • Netflix - $FREE
  • Alarm - $TBD

Ps. I only pay $45 for Comcast Internet 25-30mbps down (last year had $20-25 promo for 1 year). All my TV watching is free.

directnow is an option i was considering but it all seemed a bit of a hassle to save $30 a month or so.

DirecTV NOW if you have AT&T wireless service. Bundled, I pay $10/month for the $35/month package. It works very well; turn on the app, and regular cable TV is streaming onto your device instantly. Easy and hassle-free. Works perfectly for sports and news and other time-sensitive/live content.

PlayStation Vue
Sling TV
DirecTV Now
YouTube TV
Hulu With Live TV

I think those are the major over-the-top TV offerings.

This appears to be an up-to-date summary of them:
https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-t...-with-live-tv/

I have PlayStation Vue's cheapest $29.99 package because that gives my FOX Sports and NBC Sports so I can watch FIA WEC, IMSA, F1, Indy, etc. They used to have a package with BeIN Sports so I could watch WSBK and MotoGP, but that got dropped recently. That package also includes CNN and ESPN.

I watch through an NVidia Shield, iOS devices, and desktop browsers.

I'm really leaning towards Sling Blue with the $5 addon for Sports Channels (total of $30 a month and allows 3 devises to be used at the same time).

I have netflix so that's there as well. I think Sling Blue is everything I need with ESPN and the sports channels being added.
