help key w/slash while driving
hi I have a 2011 z4 30i no comfort access while im driving the car with the fob in the ignition the warning light key w/slash comes on. Brought the car back to the dealer second time they are telling me because I dont drive the car much (800 mile in 14 months) the battery is not getting a full charge and it wreaking havoc on the computer systems. This might be believable except I have been driving it to work and back (14miles round trip) every day for a week and a half without a problem than out of nowhere its comes back. I would think if its a charge problem it would show up after siting all winter not after 2 weeks of driving. Dont know if they are just trying to get out of fixing it or trying 2 sell me a trickle charger or if I'm wrong and they are right
thank you in advance any advice welcome Joe P. |

It might be possible. 14 miles round trip a day seems like very little driving and the car may not fully charge the battery enough during your drive? You may have been using more power than you are charging in the battery in the past week so it started giving you errors. Also keep in mind, the brakes are electronic and I believe it drains batteries while activated, it uses little power but it still consumes it. How long was the car sitting w/o being driven?

Why don't you just get the battery recharged, if it's not too late?
I can't believe how little you drive it. Don't you like it? Get out there and enjoy yourself!

I don't believe it! I drive less then you and have never had a battery issue. That said, because of the climate here, I seldom use AC or heating, or other electric accessories. I never operate the top without the engine running. |

Your dealer is FOS. My Z4 sits for weeks at a time during the winter and even in good weather I only drive it about once a month. I've had it for 2 years and it has 7500 miles on it. You must have some sort of electrical malfunction or a defective battery. Have you tried putting a Battery Tender on it for a couple days and waiting for the light to turn green. This will ensure you have a properly charged battery. If you get the same warning signal then something is wrong. Good luck.

For $60, get a Ctek battery tender to top the battery off and I bet your troubles disappear. |

thank you
I will try a trickle charger if it comes to that I have not given up on the dealership yet they still have the car. Will update thread when I here from them. I'm just so dissapointed that a dealership where I spent that much money ( 2cars this year) would blame the problem on me. I guess this is what I have to look foward 2. All their hype about everything being covered for 4 yrs all boils down to 3 oil changes if they dont fix anything thanks Joe P. |

Make sure you get a "smart" trickle charger that won't overcharge your battery. BMW makes one

I have the bmw trickle charger for the winter months (storage). I had this issue once before and decided to replace the battery in my key fob. Never had the issue you've noted, thereafter.
Perhaps it's just the battery in your key. Sometimes, the simplest answer is the right one! Pretty inexpensive and quick way to find out! Dave

It appears as if the battery level is low in the KEY FOB. That is why you have a KEY shaped warning light.
Solution: Take a loooong drive and let the car warm up and get a proper charge on the battery as well as allow the key fob to charge. |

I heard back from the dealer. after telling him that since I found people on this forum that drive less and don't have this problem his theory was unacceptable. So he looked deeper and found that the key module is bad. They are going to replace it as soon as it comes in "said it needs to be order from germany"
thank you for all ypur help joe p |

In any case, sounds like the OP had a key "issue" anyway. Glad you're getting it sorted out! Dave

UPDATE:
I know its been a while but I wanted to update this thread, rant a little and maybe get some opinions. So we picked the car up from the dealer after waiting 6 days for them to install the new module. first thing I noticed when I went to get in was my seat (the one with 800 mile use on it the one I change my clothes before leaving work the one I have managed to keep in new condition was filthy) so back inside I went to scream at the service advisor (who looked at me like I was crazy) but finally agreed to have the seat cleaned. They took the car down into the shop after about 15 minuets it reappeared the guy driving got out and appeared to be drying the car. the seat looked clean so I decided to just get out of there before I got taken out in handcuffs. When I arrived home I checked the seat more carefully and found it still had a blue stain. then as my blood stared boiling to my horror I noticed the vinyl around the stereo has all these little holes and tears. I promptly called the dealer who's response was I'll have to see that ! So we went to show him. first we couldn't get anyone to come out side to look at it in the daylight they wanted us to bring it into the shop and there was no way they were going to get the car again. So finally we got the service advisor and the assistant manager of service( the manager is harder to see then the pope) they seemed unfazed by my complaint and treated me as thou I was irrational. that's when I flipped out demanded to see the manager who was supposedly in a meeting the said they would tell him and he would call us. I said I would wait until his meeting was over 5 minuets later he appeared. I told him I wanted the seat cleaned and if the could not clean it they would have to replace it and that I wanted the vinyl replaced not patched not stretched no fixed with some f**ken new vinyl and to call me when he had the parts. to this he agreed and apologized for the troble I left feeling that I had been screwed but at least the were taking responsability and it would be fixed. only problem two weeks passed no call how long can it take to order some dash panels. So of course I called him and again was told he was in a meeting but the assistant manager said he would find out if the parts came in and call me of cause no call. next day called again another meeting but this time they gave me his voice mail at least so I left him a nasty message and of course no call back. next day I called again (must have been my lucky day he answered) He told me the parts were on back order but if I didn't want to wait they had so great nuvinly type product they could use I told him no thanks I would wait. my question is do you think I'm screwed that they have no intention of ever fixing my car? Are they just waiting me out , how long can it take to get parts? should I be contacting a lawyer? any advice is welcome thanks in advance Joe P. |

To be perfectly honest, ranting and raving won't get you anywhere. They'll just treat you like a crazy person and hope you go away. Or at least not want to be nice to you. It sounds like they're taking responsibility, so take a deep breath, change your tone and wait for them to get the parts in. It's not like you can't drive the car - we're taking about some minor cosmetic stuff.

I recently had a similar service experience. I took my car in (beige leather) with a pristine interior. I get the car back the leather on the drivers seat and center console is filthy. Luckily I asked to see the car before paying my bill. My car had new rear tires put on and an alignment (it was with BMW for about 4-5 hours). When I saw my car I had an absolute cow. It upsets me that you pay for a nice car, you baby it and then your baby gets killed while serviced. From now on I going to have them note (in writing on the service order) the condition of the interior before they take the car from me. Yes they apologized up and down and did clean the seat and arm rest satisfactorily but I should never have had to see my car in that condition.......plus they washed the car when I explicitly said no wash. Inexcusable, in my opinion....both your case and mine. Frankly I expect more from BMW!
