UPDATE

I was able to open her up yesterday the roads with road condition nice and dry.

I found no difference at all in acceleration and / or engine behaviour after the pump change out

Mine went in Wednesday for recall at 9:30 am and ready for pick up on Thursday at 11:30 am. Apparently first step was to connect car to a center in New Jersey for diagnostics to determine action(s) needed.

-Performed programming update for control unit
-Installed new high pressure pump
-Performed an additional programming update due to a different campaign
-Washed and vacuumed
-Courtesy safety check

So far, have not noticed any difference in performance, same as before.

Dealer provided me with a brand new 328i (7 miles on the odometer) with a full tank of gas to use, not required to bring back full, while my car was being serviced during day and a half.

Dropping mine off tomorrow AM. They told me they have part and will require software update. Hopefully I can get back same day. Then Monday appointment with Dinan for reflash.

so to be clear, what exactly are they doing. Are they saying that the new pumps solve the problem? Is it the programming? What is going to prevent the problems from happening again?

BMWs strategy is a combination of hardware and software fixes.

Prior to the recall they tried out a software only fix that controls the speed of the pump and the tank level and in-tank fuel pressure sensors. Some people took their Z in, got a software flash, the pump sounded different and then a while later still had issues, so BMW replaced the HPFP.

Under the recall in most cases they are doing both at the same time.

Mine is at the shop now. They also doing the 1 year maintenance. Then they added $299 for wheel alignment. Really??? They said not part of the maintenance package as it affects tire wear. And they will change tire air to nitrogen which suppose to last 6 months without putting additional air (advisor said he will do it for free, but usually $99). Oh well...On write-up it says software update which they said takes the longest and fuel pump replacement. I'll update once I get my car back later today.

I hope no one is falling for this gaseous nitrogen (GN2) scam by the OEM dealers and tire resalers. Air is already 78% GN2 and the other major component GO2 (21%) is a even bigger molecule than GN2. Air is not going to leak out any faster or slower than 100% GN2. The only difference between compressed air -vs- compressed nitrogen is that the air will likely have some moisture in it. This will not harm the rim/tire and as long as you aren't involved in a santioned motor race where slight variations of pressure may be critical to the handling of the car - you will never notice the difference on the street.

Dealership called and they said they need to call BMW NA regarding the software update on Monday. Now they may keep it until Tuesday. I also told them to cancel wheel alignment as I don't think I really need that done with such low miles.

You're correct. Unless you have abnormal tire wear or the car pulls to one side or the other. hang onto your $300.

I'm still waiting for my recall letter. Just passed 6000 miles on the drive home from work on Friday. Car runs great so not an emergency, but I am wondering where the letter is.

My exhaust only pops loudly (backfire) in manual / Normal mode during upshifts. Once I use Sport or Sport+ the shifts are so quick and boost is maintained through changes that it does NOT backfire.

On downshifts, yes there will be popping in any mode and in manual.

Mine was in for a day and a half, there were two software updates, one for the HPFP and another for some other campaign

The 'other campaign' makes the ECU readable on non-BMW code readers. Required by law (as I understand it) to allow service at other-than-BMW shops.

I brought mine in for an oil change and they updated both the HPFP software and the emissions program. They gave me a 328 as the loner car and what a shock to the system that was! It felt like I was driving a Honda compared to the Z4 35i.

Update went smoothly and they had it back to me the same day.

The yellow icon on the dash that looks like a car on a hoist came on last Thursday. The owners manual stated that the fault was either with the fuel delivery system or the brake light control system. I checked the brake lights and they worked just fine. I made an appointment at the local BMW dealer on Friday for a check-out today. They changed the HPFP this morning, and the car was ready by 2pm. No problem so far.

Of note, the car never had trouble starting or any long cranks before I took it in. It seemed to have full power as well. At the service counter this morning there was some discussion as the HPFP recall didn't show up initially when they checked the VIN, but a second look turned up the recall, in German. I saw as I looked at the printout over the counter a word that contained 'hoch' and 'pompe'. This was close enough to 'high' and 'pump' for me, and I assumed the middle part of the word meant 'pressure', so I pointed out to the service guy (who also doesn't speak German), that this looked like the HPFP recall to me. The rest is history, and our Zed was fixed.

2/1/11 SA update:

My car is still at the dealership since Saturday. It's is now Tuesday and here is the latest email from my advisor:

Good morning Cris.* When programming the vehicle, it failed and caused the JBE module to fail as well.* It also asked for a new vehicle order after programming.* We have installed a new JBE and it is now back on the programming station with the new vehicle order.* I hope to have it done my day end, but I do not want to make any promises until I am sure that all the programming is complete.* We have had several cars that the new software has failed certain modules. I would not be concerned about it though, just software related.

Final update as of 2/2/11:
Got my car back towards end of day yesterday. They told me that they had to replace the JBE to get the programming to finally work. I could tell the car was back to factory power and my Eisenmann sounded less aggressive. My drive home was a bit disappointing after getting used to Dinan.

Sent car off to Dinan Morgan Hill early this morning for re-flash. Happy to have it completely back to normal with Dinan Stage 2.

HPFP Warranty complete

I was the orignal poster on this thread. Got my Zipster back from the BMW dealer in Austin - based on your inputs took it there for the warranty work and Dinan reflash as my home dealer in San Antonio wasn't a Dinan dealer.

Took them longer than expected - like some others they had problems with the software update. Have attached the service order - note that the software problem with my car was caused by the SmartTop unit I installed to allow the control of the hard top while moving - This was caught by the dealer in the load process - but they didn't make a big deal. Did appear that the "CTM" software was not upgraded (wonder what I am missing?).

A few requests for comment:
-- Can anyone decipher the acronyms: "DME for HTP", DME, CAGS, EGS, SIB, and so on?
-- Can anyone comment on the HPFP part number 13-51-7-616-446 is that the latest and greates HPFP? (I hope)
-- Comment on the software load ver 2.40.3?

I did ask and got my oil and oil filter changed (had it a year) and they also put on new wipers. Was happy there were no charges for any thing else including the Dinan reflash.

My Z4 is at the dealer for the HPFP recall and a recommended SW upgrade. Plus its due for an oil service and brake pad. Plus a plastic bracket on the left side of the trunk partition broke and is being replaced. I dropped it off Thursday and should get the car back Saturday morning.

I've got a 335d loaner. The diesel is quite a nice setup. I'm getting 30 mpg in my daily commute in 2 days, including a 45 minute drive through rush hour traffic.

The 446 is the latest HPFP.

DME = Digital Motor Electronics commonly referred to as ECU (Engine Control Unit)
SIB = Service Bulletin
EGS = Electronic Gearbox Control
CTM = Convertible Top Module
