ESS Flash on 35is vs 35i

I have just bought me a 35i with manual gearbox. My first mod was to order the ESS flash chip. But after some web searching, I have a question...

If I look at the ESS homepage and compare 35i vs 35is tune, the 35is gets a lot more torque from their tune. 355 of torque on wheels for the 35i at stage2 and 407 for the 35is at stage1.

I thought the engines was the same? Can a 35i use the 35is tune?

Stage1 tune for 35is

Stage2 tune for 35i

There is no ESS "Stage 1" for the 35is cars as the ESS Stage 1 tune makes approximately the same power as a 35is car does stock.

therefore, they only show the numbers for Stage 2 for the 35is tune.

Like the above said but you also got to remember that just because this one dyno gave these results, you can't compare them to a different car per sey. I'll explain my point by using the E92 M3 that I use to own. I got a wheel hp result of 360 stock and about 278lb torque but another E92 M3 (same dyno on same day) got about 325 whp and I forget his torque but it was much lower than mine. Both cars were the same engine and same year at about the same temperature. He was pretty bummed.

So much variation between the same model car, I would think the variation would be even more between 35i and 35is. It wouldn't surprise me to see some 35i pull better than some 35is stock even though that is unlikely. I'm just saying, the only dyno results I can compare are the same dynos for the same car after mods are put in. Between cars, there is just too much variation to base a decision on.

while day vs. day and dyno vs. dyno is certainly true - two identical cars on the same day should not have anywhere near that much difference. cars don't vary by 35rwhp from the factory.

I see your point with the variation on engines, but this is a big difference in torque. They write this on their web site: "Application intended for: All 1M, 335is, Z4 3.5is from 2009 2010 2011".
Nothing about the 35i, so is this another tune?

Ah, I missed that.

I'm sure ESS can chime in.

You'd think that would be true but it wouldn't surprise me. I looked back at the dyno that I was referring to in the above example and I did get one thing wrong. That car was a 2009 bone stock and mine is a 2010 bone stock. Everything else was the same and he did his dyno right after I did mine. So it was about as close as you can get. In any case, I still don't believe any dyno on different cars..I only believe dynos on the same cars around the same time if a part was put on the car and the dyno was done same day under same conditions. I'm not much of a fan of variation. haha But yeah, good question for ESS to answer

The dyno's above are different types of cars Z4 VS 335, run on different dynos, in different regions of the world. The numbers do not matter as much as the delta gains from stock to tuned. The is model comes tuned from the factory and runs a short period of overboost when stock VS the non is which is not factory tuned and does not run overboost. The numbers you see for stock on the is "top dyno" is with overboost active. Our software makes the power band you see at all times.

Hope this helps.

The engines are slightly different on the IS to the 35i... different intercooler and exhaust for starters. It could explain variances at higher powers/tunes.
