Ipod in Z4

Ok, i didn't even had a Walkman so i'm not the guy running around listening to music when on the move.

I have a decent 7.2 system setup at home, so i went for the pro system (14 speaker 650w amp) in my Z4.

I think i have to buy an Ipod for the car now.........as i don't know anything about them i would like to have some tips of what model i should buy.

What kind of formats can you play from an Ipod? Audio/video?

Thanks

Ps. I'm not from the stoneage, but close!

The iPod Nano is best for cars being flash memory. It can also do pics and videos albeit a VERY small screen. I don't know the current memory sizes but 8GB can hold ~ 2000 songs and 16GB can hold ~4000 songs. I have 2000 songs, 1000 pics, and ~ 100 videos on my 16GB with room for more. The Z4's connection can only play the audio but audio from music videos does work.

The iPod Touch also works. It can do the iPhone apps and has WiFi internet connectivity but it's more expensive. It also has a nice size screen, great if you like showing off your photos to friends.

The key to organizing a large collection is playlists. I have about 5-10 small mixes by genre and then larger lists that I can play in random order. But the Z4 iDrive SW can also quickly scroll by Song, Artist, etc. Even ZZ Top is no problem, unlike older iDrive versions that took minutes to scroll a long list.

I don't mind the standard Apple iTunes SW. It's easy to "rip" CDs into your computer with it and then use the cable included with the iPod to sync it to the song collection on the PC. It took me months to do 200+ CDs, a stack every weekend. I didn't do every song, but any that I'd listen to. You can also hit the iTunes store online and download almost any song you could ever think of to your collection. They are 99c or $1.29 each. That's a great way to pick up songs you like but wouldn't buy a whole CD.

I was late into this game but love having the choice of 2000 songs in the car.
I can then take the iPod out of the car and use it at work, or while biking, jogging, etc.

Why not just use the USB port to load all of your music onto the HD and not even use the iPod ?? BTW if you leave the iPod in the car all the time it could burn up in hot weather with the car closed up.

I've never had an issue with an iPod in the glove box or console and I've had them thru 3 Charlotte summers. I'm not sure about the hard drive in an iPod classic. I use Apples AAC format which does good compression yet retains good sound quality.

Thank you for the extensive information!

Made it easy, will go for the 16Gb Nano.

Wish everything was easy like this, nowadays there are so many options on everything that it's almost impossible to choose,

thanks again richard !

If you have 12gB Hard disk in your Z4, you don't need the iPod, Just use any USB drive and load all the songs (through USB in the glove box). Otherwise you need to have the iPod interface option (USB+Aux in at the arm rest storage compartment yhe cost around $500 extra

Richard in NC,

I had a 30GB gen 5 in my center console in the holder provided in my old 2007 335i cab . It got so hot that you could not touch it !! Never worked again !! Now I use the thumb drive and it has no heat issues.

Krap kun krap.

Too little, to long ago. Last time was in 2006. Mostly Phuket, the green paradise.

Z4 and Sun = Nirvana?

Had a dream of building a house there (around Karon, Kata), but destiny wanted something else.....

I'll be back, probably next year.

I use a 16GB Nano. What's better about the nano vs the cars hard drive is that it is very easy to pop the nano out of the car and setup playlists and swap your music in and out of the nano from your PC. I don't know how easily you can setup playlists on the internal HD, but I love the playlist features in iTunes.

I have a 335 with the previous version of the nav software so no internal HD in any case, but on my wife's Mercedes, we never use the internal HD and opt only for an iPod.
