Does mileage get better with age?

Here's a good converter to use:

Does anyone remember how to reset your ECU after the break in period is done?

tranquility, the car learns based on your driving habits and slightly alters its performance based on those characteristics. Not saying it will make a big dent in your gas mileage but it's a good idea to reset the ECU once you feel comfortable so it doesn't remember how you had to drive during your break in period.

Does this mean you dont have iDrive?
With the iDrive you can reset the milage computer for a journey or the total milage calculator through the iDrive options...

I think you know what I mean, but just to be clear: does the car's fuel consumption improve once it is broken-in and months/years later on in its engine life?

I don't have iDrive...not sure if advisable to do it or how to do it?

Over here we have these little thingies at gas stations:

What you do is you insert the nozzle into the tank of your car and pull the trigger, and in a minute or so you have a full tank again. Remember to repeat this often enough and you'll never have to worry about MPG again.

tranquility you might give this a try.

Resetting the Adaptive Driver Memory for the Automatic Transmission

Quote:
Over time the ECU in the trans learns your driving style and that is what it keeps in memory. The throttle is "Drive By Wire" and adapts and personalizes to your particular driving style. However, there is a way to set the ECU back to factory default. I have done this with my 07 328 and it works fine. I've done this with several Mercedes. The only difference with a push button to start/stop engine system is that you must use the start button instead of turning the key to it's first position and again to simulate the off position.
DO NOT REMOVE THE KEY DURING THIS PROCEDURE
Here it is; How to do a TBA: Throttle Body Adaptation reset.
Resetting the Adaptive Driver Memory for the transmission.

Works with any car that has Driver Adaptive Electronic Controlled Transmission.

1. Get in your car, it doesn't matter if you close the door or not.
2. Turn the key to the on (not start) position, the position just before the starter turns over. BMW: press start button – foot off brake - all idiot lights on.
3. Press the gas pedal to the floor with the key in the "on" position. BMW: All idiot lights on.
4. Hold the pedal to the floor for five seconds, then turn the key back to the "off position". BMW: foot off brake press start button - all idiot lights now off (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.
5. Wait a full 2 minutes for a full electronic alignment. Don't remove the key.
6. Start engine, drive the car, notice the difference.

That is usually the case, for most cars.

One thing I've learned about these direct-injected, high strung engines is that they are very sensitive to a dirty air filter.

On my IS350 I noticed a fuel mileage degradation once the air filter reached 8,000 miles/13,000 km or so, and changing it instantly restored the mpg.
I would assume the N54 engine to be just as sensitive; these things need lots of air! Change or clean your air filter every 10k miles/16k km or so to preserve your fuel mileage and performance.

Is there a need to reset the ECU since I assume that it is constantly learning the driver's driving style?

Huston to Trnquility Base. Negative on that. It was a joke!
You were inferring older engines and their changed consumption. I played on older drivers instead...

I found it funny, but then again, I am criminally insane...

I go first,
Model: 30i manual
Engine idle rpm: 600
Mileage: 5569km (3460 miles)
Fuel consumption: 9.3 km per litre (21.87mpg)
At the start of my 13,303 KM US road trip Computer Standing was at 10.5 L/100 KM. At the end of my road trip (Ontario, Canada ---> Flagstaff, AZ ----->Las Vegas ----> Mohave Dessert -----> Napa Valley, CA ----> Santa Cruz, CA. -----> LA, CA -----> along US 1 and 101 up the coast -----> Portland, OR. ------> Mount Ruschmore -----> then back to Ontario, Canada via Chicago, IL) the Computer readout after the trip was 8.6 L / 100 KM.

I estimate 85% driving at 75 MPH / 120 KM/Hr and 15% at lower speeds in towns and cities.

You will find that it starts to lower as you drive longer distances. In my case it went gradually to the lowest reading above after around 8,000 KM

Hope this helps.

UPDATE ... this was with my sDrive Z4 3.5is ... just to clarefy since I now drive an M3

usual consumption was 9.5-10kms/liter,now I changed air filter and got K&N filterconsumption is about 10-10.5 kms/liter...
On falzarego pass, italian dolomites mountain,i managed to do something like 3.7kms/liter...on recent trip on the nurburgriing 4-5km/l...but I took the car on the ragged edge(mmh, well i took my driver limits on the ragged edge, the limits of the car performance were 2-3 step further, I am not a big driver).

I'm now under 7,000kms, still driving mostly city and now taking it easy since it's wintertime. Still, my mileage remains relatively high (although better than b4):
19.7 US MPG | 11.9L/100 kms | 23.7 IMP MPG | 8.4 kms/L
