Exhaust tuning

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? When I hear about how a manufacturer tunes an exhaust for a particular sound (like the difference between the Z4 35i and 35is) I assume that this tuning is done in the muffler. So if you're looking for a different sound from your exhaust, can't you replace just the muffler rather than the whole exhaust system? What's the advantage in replacing the whole system, especially if what you're looking at is a cat back system? Doesn't seem like it would change much with the car. Thanks!

Eisenmann "tunes" the exhaust by measuring 46 points along the exhaust flow for pressure, flow and temperature and fine tunes these values to suit each engine perfectly without regard for the cost, hence double the cost of a stock exhaust. The exhaust note at the tail end is the easy part, but just opening it up would unbalance the system and cost power and fuel.

Thanks, great explanation

I would have to disagree with that. Less back pressure = faster turbo spool up = more power. The tuning is more for sound at that point.

Turbocharged cars need as minimal back pressure as possible from the exhaust. I remember on the old S15 silvias you could gain a huge amount of power by replacing the stock exhaust alone.
