Smoke on start up
Hi all.
Bit of advice if someone can help please. Had my 2013 E89 (2.0i) for around 6 months. On start up, exhaust blows smoke for a minute or less. During cold weather I put it down to condensation. However, not too cold in the mornings now due still blowing smoke. Oil levels are ok and leaving nothing on my drive. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Just looks like condensation…what’s it look like after 10 miles of running?
These engines N20 don’t tend to suffer from oil burn related issues and the injectors are much better so excess combustion products seem unlikely

Yeah i have had some conversations with my friends too about getting some smoke on startup. But everyone tells me that its just condensation and nothing to worry about..

It only seems to be on start up. No problems minutes after I drive off, and for the rest of the day, it’s only first thing. I was concerned as it seems to be actual smoke and doesn’t ’evaporate’ as condensation would. Oil level is still on ‘max’ 6 months after last service so doesn’t seem to be burning oil. |

I have just checked the documents, and not sure if it’s related but at the last service in September (before I bought it), the garage used 0W20 oil. I understand that ideally it should be 5W30.
What you guys think? |

For N20 BMW recommended 0W20..5W30 was for N52/N54
The 20 bit is a fuel economy focus.. Personally I’d go 0W30 or 5W30 The economy focus is at the expense of long term stress protection..
