+1. I'm a big softy for the likes of the Jaguar XK-E and other classics with their long sporty styled hoods, and cabins towards the rear axle. Svelte.

Surely the definition of a Roadster is sitting on the back axle with a longgg hood out front.
A friend had a Bugatti lookalike and I had a go in that, that was a Roadster.
Certainly felt like the front wheels were 20 feet in front of you from the steering feel!

So I guess that rules out any Porsche drop-top, eh?

Autsj! This is a painfull comparison. The sexy lines of the E89 are completely gone The lines, starting at the rear end which is way too high up, run all the way to the front straight downwards to the tarmac. It reminds me of a Corvette. In fact, when checking some pics on the internet, Corvette made the exact same design evolution mistake BMW is making here in my opinion:

Look at how sexy that '72 Corvette was with those lines and low rear end....

Btw: with that new ragtop one of the things I didn't liked about the E85 is back: poor visibility without the secondary side window...

My thoughts:

Those side views are not true and level for the Z5.
Anyhow I see a down market car that doesn't compete in the Corvette and MB market. The soft top is much less expensive, less complex and way lighter.

More of a modern Z3. There is a niche there now.

It will need lots of camera tech to overcome the poor visibility.

No reason why a 6 cyl. can't be offered eventually. Or even a hybrid with lots of power, and competitive with Corvette and MB but more eco (fot the Euro rules.)

A Dinan 2.0 Turbo would be a fun roadster with the right exhaust sounds.

A lower price than E89 is needed. The hard top makes the E89 too pricey and heavy. (not complaining, just sayin)

The E89 will be missed, like a lot of the great BMWs.

Very happy to have found my E89. Love the entire package. Change is inevitable. I think the current E89 has been around long enough. I just hope the Toyota connection doesn't ruin things.

.......... said from a guy who owns a 2015 Toyota Highlander (and loves it).

Pretty much any Porsche, they look balanced.
The fronts are too short.
I would say at least 2/3rds to 3/4 of vehicle must be in front of driver.

But in realty any two seat drop top is called a Roadster, I suppose to differentiate from a convertible.

It's profile reminds me of the S2000, and yes the cockpit seems too far forward. As for the Toyota engine, well they did good in the Lotus Elise, however.... I look at it this way, if you are a premium car manufacture and you include an engine from a generic car manufacture does that mean you don't know how to build an engine, or don't want to or maybe you just want to be a coach builder. Does it mean your end result is cheapened, perhaps, not a premium car. I do like the Toyota reliability, but BMW should be able to step up to that plate. Just some of my quick thoughts. I think I am going to go hug my E89 and my E85,.... sniff sniff..
