Oil change every 11,300 miles - Really?

Took my 2011 35i in for service this morning. They agreed to change the oil because it had been one year since the last. Otherwise, BMW would only change it every 11,300 miles. Since I drive less than 5k per year, it works fine for me. I guess it works for BMW too. After 50k, it is the owners problem.

Not sure you got that right. You can get a low mileage oil change at 1 year, but otherwise it's about 15K miles between changes.

One other thing to note is that after a low mileage annual oil change the CBS (condition based service) computer is not reset, so you will have to go in for another oil change soon after the first one.

The annual oil change isn't a "favor" done by dealers. It is part of the maintenance schedule for the cars.

The newer models are getting oil changes at 11300, this was a change by BMW about 6 month to a year ago i think. I didnt think it was retro to the older models too but who knows if the dealers are getting that right.

I knew there was a change in frequency, but I thought it was 10K with newer models. I guess their bean counters came up with 11,300.

My 2011 just had an oil change 4K miles ago. Computer is telling me I have 6K to go before my next oil change. Looks like they're changing it every 10K miles. My warranty just expired. I'm officially paying out of pocket for the next one

Very strange. I have a 2012 and when I reset my oil change interval, it said if have 15K to go. Did you get some kind of SW update?

Now that you mention it, I was having an issue with stalling at low RPM's and they did perform a software update shortly after the oil change. Now you got me wondering how accurate my data is.

My 2012 z4 has always been 15k miles. My understanding is the 10k intervals in the CBS were for newer cars and not retroactively applied. The only way an older car would get oil changes prior to 15k miles is with low mileage annual oil change

I find it interesting that when the manufacturer(BMW is not the only one) is paying for the oil change then the mileage requirements increase. What happened to the 3,000 mile claim from the quick oil change places? My 2007 Mercury Milan had a 7,500 mile requirement according to FoMoCo. I'm pretty sure my '13 Z4 has a 10,000 mile requirement which may now be 11,300 miles. That's an unusual number. Just saying.

3k interval was non-synthetic (dino) oil.

7k - 15k intervals coincided with dealer paid service but also lower wear engines and synthetic oil that does last longer than regular oil.

The recommended change on my wife's Infiniti QX (V8 engine) is every ~3,875 miles, and of course, not covered by the dealer

BMW, going way back, always required synthetic oil. before the 4 year maintenance plan, oil change intervals were "as often as you can". but when they started paying for it, economics took over. the reason the dropped it from 15K to 10K is because many owners didn't know that they could get a low mileage oil change after a year and they were running their oil for too long a time, not to long on mileage.

I thought CBS would take care of the >1 year without oil changes. My dealer has done those for me as I drive <5000 miles / yr.

If you guys really care about getting the interval right, do used oil analysis. anything else is hearsay/guesswork..

Also, even the old school guys in the "roundel" magazine are clear that you need to keep the car well past 100k miles to personally see benefits from "old school" intervals, so be honest with how long you want to keep the car before spending the $ and time

Can't argue with that. Mine's a keeper so I'm doing my due diligence.
