What next after E89 Part II
My lease is up in May... Starting to look, so I am ready to order in March time frame (and who knows, there may be a lease pull ahead).
Brother in law has a new corvette. Very nice. He has the coupe, I would go with the convertible. Doesn't look like there is a national manufacturer leasing program available, as configured and with a little bit luck negotiating, 'my' corvette would be about 72k. After taxes, fees, etc. $80k. I can't wrap my head around spending that much for a 8 to 9 months out of the year car. I guess we are spoiled by the BMW residuals! Next Z4 is not coming out for another 2 to 3 years. Don't want the Jaguar. SLK AMG? SL is a totally different car, but people seem to really like it. Insurance would probably go through the roof, but with the right timing, seems to be that good discounts can be had. What did others do? Got into another Z4 even though they got essentially into the same car? |

Neither car. Had a look at a F-type coupe S but was not overall impressed. Advantage of the design aspect of the fixed roof but I much preferred the look / stance of the Z4. Looks like a cheap imitation of Aston Martin's design. And also having owned British cars and being all too familiar with their reliability....
Not sure on the size but maybe C63 coupe or new S class coupe? |

My lease is up next year too. I'm been eyeing that Carrera S, maybe a low mileage 2013 one. But I might think long and hard about the M4. There's really no deciding between these two.

Yes, M4 convertible is worth a second & third thought ...
I liked the Boxter ever since it came out, but frankly, their configurator is just so much work! Check something and you need to go back two steps because your choice de-selected something and you almost need to start over. They have the appearance of choice, but in reality, only certain combinations are allowed. It's almost like reading one of these old adventure books where you had to go to a specific page depending on the choices you made, just to end up in a dead end and having to go back to a much earlier page. The S class is beautiful, but would like a convertible. And its a bit outside my price range... |

I think persian54 on these forums went to an SL from Z4. You should check in with him
OP, my lease ends same time as you and am thinking about a used C6 z06 with z07 package, used 997.1 turbo or a new F80 M3 which are all the same purchase cost. I'm leaning towards the F80 to get the euro delivery experience and lower cost of ownership Good luck with the decision and let us know what you end up with! |

Ok in terms of a convertible perhaps it might be worth waiting for the next models of the Z4 and SLK. The current SLK doesn't really appeal to me even in AMG form currently, however it is clear from owning a Benz that they make a more solid and reliable car than BMW. I also really, really like the design direction they are heading in compared to BMW.
I honestly think that the design of the current 3-series is a step back from the e9x. Everytime I see a e9x on the road I really appreciate the effort BMW when into perfecting that design from every angle. The new F3x front end just don't look right. The new M4 is a cracker but I cant help feeling that its S55 engine although impressive is it's not a wild step away from an N54/N55 which the biturbo V8 AMG would be if you decided to go with an AMG. |

Older brother has a E63 wagon and we got the oil pretty hot on the short Toronto Motorsports Park track in cool 20C ambient temps weather. I think the car would struggle in high temp socal summer or on longer tracks with more wide open throttle time. My other concern with AMG is the way the gearbox is programmed (very slow shifts even in manual mode, and really punitive redline) I thought about the upcoming C63 but I'm not expecting the concerns above to the changed vs how the E63 is implemented so I'm not going to wait for it As for the SLK, no way I'd go for it right now. It isn't any faster than the cobb stage 1 N54+DCT Z4. Not enough of an upgrade |

With all the success Chevy has with the latest Corvette, I can't believe BMW isn't considering turning the Z4 into a Corvette killer... They say there is no market for a Z4 M, but given the latest Corvette's success, I would argue there is. Many people who would never have looked twice at a Corvette are going 'hmmm, maybe....'

I'll be stepping away from the new convertible market for a while and just enjoy the old M-roadster. Nothing new excites me anymore.

I like BMW - that is why I have purchased them. However with the latest M3/4 using ARTIFICIAL engine sounds played through speakers in the cabin - that's just sad.
AMG simply don't need to do this. If you bought a C63 507 now it would command a lot of respect on the road for many years to come I wager. |

I had a 2006 Z43.0si and when it was time for something new I cross shopped the e89 and others. After driving the Boxster S it really became a no brainer. But everyone is different in what they want and "need."

They could have finished the job and made the same conversions that switched the 135 to 1M and did Z435 to Z4M but instead they went 1/2 a$$ and did Z435is (flash tune + stickers) Not sure what would make them change their mind now |

My last two cars prior to my Z4 were Corvettes, with the last one being a convertible. After owning the Z4, I doubt I could ever go back to a ragtop convertible. As much as I like the C7, the ragtop just kills it for me. I'll stick with my Z4 for now.

I've been rolling around in a Lambo LP560-4 for a week seeing if I could actually drive something sporty without going top down. I don't know why but driving the LP makes me appreciate my Z4 a little more. maybe its the slightly better comfort, maybe its the top down...I still can't put my finger on it yet.

I can relate to what Nkc is saying but perhaps from a different angle. The Z4 is relatively easy to drive fast and also to maintain. Exotics tend to have you on edge in more ways than one. Also the attention you get is sometimes too much and becomes irritating after a while especially if you are in an area where there are no / little exotics. Sometimes you just don't feel safe either. Maybe Nkc is feeling claustrophobic without the top down option!
I would like BMW to release a Z4M coupe however I don't think this will happen. There have been no test cars for one. |

I'm seriously considering keeping the Z4. I've had this car way longer than any other cars, and I think I would regret letting it go next year.
Sure I would like a faster sports coupe or something, but the Z4 has served me so well. After all these mods the car pushes close to 400whp. I don't know what car in this class can really keep up. I can't justify going to something slower.

Here are two crappy pics that I managed to take with the boys while I had possession of the LP.
