Page 30 in the manual, available online. I think the alarm system (or certain features of it) and/or what's included in the alarm may have changed throughout the MY's, as has whether it's standard or optional.

Quick summary: According to the manual, the system responds to opening of a door, the hood or the trunk lid. Movements in the vehicle (up to the height of the seat cushions). When the car's inclination changes.

There is some info about disabling the tilt and motion sensors in the manual ... The system also lets you know if it thinks somebody has tampered with the vehicle while you were gone -- good if you suspect somebody may have planted a bomb or something ...

LOL. Thanks for that info. I will look more into the manual when I get home from the office today.

FYI there is a way to disable to motion detector if, let's say you leave your dog in the car. I rarely do it by its in the manual something like hitting the lock button twice. The red light under the rear view mirror stays on with a solid light.

Just looking "at" the manual will not do any good - you actually have to read it. The index at the back is helpful.

What exactly are sparkplug "chips" (porcelain, electrodes, the ground lug) that the bad boys are using to break windows?

If you have an alarm It does go into the details, modes, etc.

The E89 has several pieces in the alarm system, mechanical sensors on the hood, trunk and doors, 2 ultrasonic sensors in the interior compartment (under the arm rest and above the mirror) as well as a microphone (above the mirror) listening for the sound of breaking glass. The alarm system also ties into the accelerometers to detect the car being jacked up or moved. When locking the car with the remote, a second press of the "Lock" button disables to arm rest ultrasonic sensor, useful if you have an animal in the car, or the top is down.

chuck, you just described the motion detector system, so it seems like you found the info.

+eleventy billion. I'd downloaded the manual and read it several times before I ever took delivery and was able to teach the salesman a couple of things.

However, that's just not the way most people do things.

Why not? It's standard.

The alarm was not standard in Europe, so I got to see my new Z get torn apart for the install by the dealer - very painful process, but got see where everything was installed.

Huh. I've never ordered or used an alarm on any BMW since I moved to NH, so maybe I just presumed.

I haven't seen any indication that there is one, though, such as a blinking clown nose or having an alarm sound when the car was locked using the remote and my son climbed in to get his iPod out of the armrest. I suppose one explanation is that there is an alarm but it's useless...

Alarm system was not standard on the MY 2011 Z4's. It only became standard for 2012.

Well, that explains that!

It still doesn't really explain the design decision not to power the UGDO after engine shut-off given that other things such as windows and power top continue to function until a door is opened.

It could be because it's a pretty old design - that same mirror was available as an add-on many years ago, so it almost certainly doesn't communicate on the CANBUS.

I really preferred the old "roadster" mirror in my last car over this boring mirror that they use in all the models.
