The only reason that the E89 Z4 doesn't compete directly with the MB SL is the price difference. Other than that they are very similiar: luxury two-seat retractable hardtop roadsters. They are both nice cars but you aren't likely to see either one at the track.

This isn't just my opinion; several car mag road tests since the E89 first came out say that it has gone more upscale and gotten softer and heavier than the E85 or the original Z3.

...and the same magazines have all compared the Z4 to the Boxster, and rightly so, since both are sports cars to varying degrees, 2 seat roadsters, and in the same general price range give or take $5-$10k.

The only similiarity between a Z4 and SL is the hardtop. Not enough to make the 2 competitors, especially given the $25k + difference in MSRP.
